Mistaken SPAM
-
I might have clicked a response from a reader mistakingly as spam. Now they say they can’t post replies on my blog. Is this an issue with me clicking them as spam or another issue? If its me how do I get them to be able to post replies agains?

I believe this is your blog http://shaferfinancial.wordpress.com/ It would be easier to find if you linked it in your user name.
As for the spam – just look in your spam filter when the reader posts and unmark it as spam. Akismet will learn.

How can I tell if a comment is actually spam when all I can see via ASKismet is a very short excerpt. Is it possible to read to the entire blocked post and then make a decision as to whether or not it is spam?

It would be easier if you linked you user name to your blog, as explained in the sticky at the top of the forum:
Go into your dashboard -> users -> your profile -> then scroll down to ‘contact info’. In the spot where it says ‘website’ fill in the address of your blog and save the changes.
Now… when you comment here and on other blogs, your name will link to your blog. If you do this before you post your request for help, it will allow forum volunteers to be able to help you quicker since they won’t have to ask you for a link and wait until you come back to post one.As for a “short excerpt” – I’m not sure what you mean. When I check my spam filter, I see the whole thing. (As a matter of fact, I’m using a greasemonkey script to avoid seeing the whole thing!)

Made the changes, thank you for the advice.
preceeded with 3 dots … and ending with 3 dots … the post shows one shor sentence between the dots and says here’s an excerpt.
Maybe there isn’t more, but it sure looks like there is.
-
Thanks for linking your blog! Are you using anything that reduces the spam to a single line, like the greasemonkey script I mentioned?
-
Not that I know of…I’m pretty new to this and may have the settings wrong. I’ll look for an issue.
-
If it’s preceeded and followed by three dots, that typically indicates it is a trackback from another blog that has linked to your post. You can click on the link to their site to see what they have done. Sometimes they are legitimate use of your stuff, and sometimes they are blog scrapers that are using your story to boost their search engine results and get people to click on advertising on their blog.
Always check out any trackbacks and pingbacks before approving them. If they are blog scrapers, mark them as spam.
-
It shows up as a pingback. Here’s the link. I have no idea if they are legit or not. So far you all have been very helpful. Other than they seem to link to many blogs, I don’t see why it’s screened as spam. Of course, I could be very naive to who’s who.
