Mistakenly deleted redirect

  • Unknown's avatar

I purchased the $13 site redirect to a .com domain in june 2021 abd and on the 5th of oct 2021 I mistakenly deleted it, I only want to PAUSE it for a while because I wasn’t getting desired results (my traffic halved). Unfortunately I didn’t know I was permanently deleting it. Is there anyway I can get a refund or get the site redirect reinstated?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

  • Hi there,

I’ve restored the cancelled subscription and confirmed that it’s working again. It’s no longer possible for us to refund this particular upgrade, as it has been too long since you bought it.

I wasn’t getting desired results (my traffic halved)

Could you expand a bit on this? To which site’s traffic are you referring?

All the site redirect does is redirect visitors to sohotamess.wordpress.com, to the domain you specify. In other words, it ensures if anyone clicks on a link for sohotamess.wordpress.com that had in the past been shared somewhere online, or perhaps a link that they have bookmarked in their browser, they’d get taken to your new site instead

Traffic that reaches your new site via this redirect will never be at the same levels as the traffic you received directly to your WordPress.com site – the bulk of traffic to your old WordPress.com site would have come from the WordPress.com Reader and from search engine results. But as soon as you stopped posting to the WordPress.com site, it would have stopped appearing in people’s Reader feeds, cutting off that source of traffic.

And once Google and other search engines discovered that your WordPress.com site’s address is being redirected, they would have removed that site from their indexes, meaning it wouldn’t appear in online search results any more. This is expected, as the redirect is essentially a message to search engines saying “I don’t live here any more, please forward my mail”.

The bulk of traffic on the new site will be coming directly from search engines, but that will take time to build up, as it takes a while both for a new site to be indexed by search engines, and for your site to achieve a high search ranking.
