Mistylook Customization
-
Hello,
I am new to wordpress and would love some help to customize my new blog. I think I’m going to use mistylook as my template and I currently have no upgrades.
1) I’d like to change the image header. How do I do this? I assume in the CSS code, but I’m not sure. What size does my new image have to be?
2) How do I change the font color in the words “Eat Your Colors” at the top, right?
If there’s a tutorial for this kind of stuff (for people without upgrades), please point me in that direction.
Thank you!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

1) You do not need any upgrades to change headers. Go to appearance > header and you can upload a new image there. It also lists the image size. I suggest sizing the image exactly before you upload it since the crop feature here is a little flakey and doesn’t always work well.
2) That would require some CSS editing experience and the paid CSS upgrade.
First place I would start is this support document: http://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-started/ .
Then have a look over all the categories and topics listed on the main support page: http://en.support.wordpress.com/ .

Change Header
Dashboard >> Appearance >> Header – upload new picture here
Change “Eat Your…..”
Dashboard >> Settings >> General – Change Title and Tag line
Look like no CSS needed unless you want to change colors of text.
Start here for help getting started, yes some of it is a bit dull: http://en.support.wordpress.com/

Already changed the header pic. Success!
So font colors would need an upgrade. Is that accurate?

You are correct – I missed the “change colors” thing – do I get half credit for qualifying my CSS answer?? :)
You and TT type so much faster than I do it is embarrassing – I also don’t have the Dashboard Menu memorized and usually go back and double check my answer.
Thanks for the help – I have learned quite a bit just watching the Q&A go by.

You guys both get full credit for being so quick and helpful. And for being so helpful….one more question (for now)… :)
OK….would I need the upgrade to change the font sizes for all the words on the side of the page? You know, like “Search It”, “Feed It”, “Recent Entries”, etc.
It’s probably worth the $15/year, but I just want to try to understand how much I can change without it.
Thanks!

@auxclass, yes, we’ll even give you 75% credit. :-)
We’ve just been doing this so long, that pretty much everything is etched forever in our brains. Come to think of it, that is a scary thought.
That is one of the best ways to learn is to just follow the forum threads and see what is going on. Much of what we have all learned is from reading threads.

75%! :)
Good to know that it’s easy to learn from the forum threads. Thanks.
It seems that even without the upgrade, you can edit CSS code under “Appearance”.
So, Mr. Experts…. can you explain to me what you can do with the CSS upgrade that you cannot do by editing the CSS code included in the free account?
-
You can’t save your changes without the upgrade. Changes should go away as soon as you log out. I suspect that is to let you test drive things before getting the upgrade.

/nod to auxclass
You can try out CSS changes in the CSS editor and see what they will look like using the preview button, but the CSS mods are never actually applied to your blog.
Definitely give the CSS a test drive using the preview button, and then if and when you are ready, buy the upgrade. One suggestion is to always save your CSS changes to a plain text fie on your computer in case something goes wrong.
Also, read this by devblog about doing CSS here. It has to be done differently or you can end up with unexpected results.

Awesome, thanks. I think I’ll be getting the upgrade, so might be coming back with more CSS questions in the near future. I will look at the info that’s out there, first, though.
Thanks again.

If you check the CSS forum here, there are some useful links at the top of it to CSS tutorials and resources.

ACK! I got the upgrade and my pretty header pic disappeared. I see on the forum that other people have had this problem, but I don’t see how they resolved it. Tips?
