Mixed Content On Instant Post Feedback Page Causing Blank Page In Firefox

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I woud like to report a problem that I reported before on this now closed thread:

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/mixed-content-on-instant-post-feedback-page-causing-black-page-in-firefox-23?replies=3

Firefox 24 is now out but this problem still remains as I expected, Firefox is still detecting Mixed Content/Insecure Content on WordPress.com Instant Post Feedback Pages whenever you publish a new post with Https/SSL enabled, and so it blocks that content causing the page/preview to be blank/missing.

If you click the icon that show the SSL/HTTPS information it shows:

“Firefox has blocked content that isn’t secure.”

Disabling Firefox from doing this on the page is pointless because each Instant Feedback Page has a different address, and so the mixed content will always be blocked on newly published Instant Post Feedback pages.

Either there really is mixed content/insecure content on the WordPress.com Instant Post Feedback ages, if so then WordPress.com needs to fix this, or this is a Firefox glitch since verison 23; either way it is not fixed, and I just wanted to report it again since my other thread was closed oddly.

So far Firefox has only blocked mixed content when there is really mixed content, so I somewhat doubt that this is a bug but it could be, either way this is something that can be easily verified by someone on the WordPress.com Team making sure that all the content on those pages are SSL/HTTPS encrypted & not HTTP/unencrypted.

    -Thank you

  • Thanks John for reporting this again. We’re looking at this deeper to determine the best way to modify the “post-posting” page to act more like we expect it to behave.

Please let me know if you have any questions and I’ll report back when we have progress to report.

    Thanks!

You are welcome, and thank you for responding Kraftbj.

I look forward to hearing from you in the future once this is fixed.

I do not have a question at this time, but I do want to report that another bug that I reported months ago is still not fixed the last time that I checked it (not a huge problem but I find it odd that something so small has not been fixed even months later):

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/able-theme-widget-spacing-not-consistent?replies=20#post-1302749

Also the quadruple spacing glitch still happens sometimes and I think that it is connected to Zemanta, and I figured out a way to reproduce the issue sometimes; I reported it to Zemanta twice months ago, but they never responded either time by email or through their support form.

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/wordpresscom-quadruple-spacing-glitch-when-publishingupdating-posts/page/2?replies=38#post-1177307

One way to reproduce the quadruple spacing glitch sometimes is to add a centered image at the very top of a post with Zemanta, after adding it go back & remove it, add another image centered & at the top of the post just like the original image, and then publish the post; and usually the quardruple glitch will happen.

    -Thank you

  • Thanks John. I’m signing off for the night now but will check out both threads tomorrow to see if there are any updates.

Okay, thank you very much Kraftbj. :)

  • Hi John,

Regarding the mixed content, can you confirm on your end that it works as expected for you? We deployed a fix for sites that use wordpress.com in their address and it works as I’d expect for me.

If anyone else finds this post, we are aware that sites on mapped/registered domains (e.g. your WordPress.com site is at http://example.com instead) are still experiencing the blank frame post-publishing.

    Thanks!

  • Regarding Able widget spacing ( https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/able-theme-widget-spacing-not-consistent ), the theme folks have been dedicating their resources to bigger issues and new themes. In short, it’s very low on the list unless we have a fair number of users start reporting it.

Regarding Zemanta, we’ll see if we can reproduce this internally as well. When you experience it, are you able to view the Text editor and see extra html?

    Thanks!

It worked, thank you for getting this Mixed Content bug fixed Kraftbj, if only everyone was as helpful you. :)

Thank you for the Able bug update, I was expecting that sadly, I am usually unlucky like that.

About the quadruple spacing glitch, in some of my old tests there is something that shows up in the Text Editors when this happens ” “:

    http://www.use.com/showoriginal.pl?set=c4c3fda70f45202b157b&p=2

When trying to reproduce this I forgot to mention a few things:

I almost always add one centered Zemanta recommended image (sometimes I manually add an image, I can not remember if the glitch happens with manually added centered images or not, so this could possibly be a bug that happens when adding & removing centered images at the top of a post with or without Zemanta sometimes) at the top of each of my posts after I type them, I put the mouse cursor in front of the first word of the post, and then I add the centered image; and sometimes I decide to try another image instead, so I will remove the original image by clicking on it & then clicking the X to remove it, and then I add a different centered image.

I also use Zemanta recommended links, tags, and then I used the default WordPress.com Spell/Grammar check; and then I Publish the post, and sometimes the quadruple spacing glitch happens, sometimes it does not but it is more likely to happen when you remove & replace a centered image in the way I mentioned.

    -Thank you

  • Interesting. I couldn’t reproduce it with a couple of quick tries, but will try a few different variations after responding to some other threads waiting for a response :-)

If, though, you have the glitch occur, could you kindly not change anything and post a link to the post here so I can check it out “in the wild”?

    Much appreciated!

Okay, that is a great idea!

I will try to remember to do that the next time the glitch happens.

In trying to reproduce the bug I also forgot to mention that I almost always double space after each sentence.

  • Unknown's avatar

I did it, your idea was genius Kraftbj!

    http://johnjronline.wordpress.com/?p=49829&preview=true

    This is what I did:

    1. Dashboard | Posts | Add New

    2. Added a title

    3. Typed random gibberish at least two lines long, and double spaced after each sentence; and added -(“Whatever”, usually I add -The End).

    4. Added a centered Zemanta recommended image by placing the mouse cursor in front of the first word in the post & then adding the image, went back & removed that image, and added a new centered image.

    5. Used default WordPress.com Spell Check/Grammar check, I previewed the post to see if the glitch happened & it did happen, and so I Published the post; and voila!

To fix the glitch whenever it happens, I have to go back to edit the post & let the page & Zemanta load completely, and then I click Update Post without making any changes; but if you do not let Zemanta load completely before Updating, the glitch is usually still there.

Oops, that first link was the preview link, here is the actual post link:

    http://johnjronline.wordpress.com/2013/09/19/glitch-test/

  • Thanks. To confirm, the quad-spacing you’re mentioning, you’re referring to the space between paragraphs? Just want to make sure we’re on the same page ;-)

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes/Oui, the space between sentences in my case, because I double space after almost every sentence (after every end mark or whatever you call them: periods/exclamation marks/question marks/et cetera). ;)

  • I think the centered image may have been throwing us of but the double-spacing is right on. I can reproduce just with the ending double space at the end of a paragraph. I’ll test it up in a few more places and write up a bug report.

Basically, we have a function that adds the paragraphs automatically, which may be a little over zealous with the double-space ending.

For now, try not to add double spaces at the end of a paragraph ;-)

Amazing, finally someone else was able to reproduce this glitch/bug, I am not the only one now!

Great work Kraftbj! *the crowd cheers* :)

I doubt that I will stop double spacing after every sentence for now, not double spacing is against my *religion*, hehehe. ;)

I often seem to be the only person in the world noticing/finding/reporting certain bugs/glitches on WordPress.com that seem to go unnoticed, it is strange & frustrating at times trying to report them & get them fixed, but your help has gave me a bit more inspiration/encouragement not to give up reporting them as I find them since you prove that there are still some people out there willing to get things done.

I look forward to seeing this bug and some of the old bugs fixed in the future, and then we can move on to some other bugs. ;)

    -Thank you very much
