Mobile menu + blog post excerpts with Balasana theme

  • Unknown's avatar

    I just switched my site to the Balasana theme and didn’t notice until I did that, on the mobile menu, there is no styling for secondary pages. It lumps all the pages into a single list. Is there a way to add custom CSS to indent the secondary pages on mobile?

    Also, I’m trying to implement a blog excerpt page, since Balasana doesn’t natively allow for this, evidently. With the blog exercept block, is there a way to remove the word “continue” that gets jammed onto the end of the excerpt and just keep the “read more” link? The page I’m referencing is here: https://jessicalynnehenkle.com/longform-essays/

    Thanks in advance for any assistance!

  • Hey there,

    Happy to help you with this.

    Is there a way to add custom CSS to indent the secondary pages on mobile?

    Yes, so the CSS you would need to add that is as follows, and this would be added via Appearance > Customize > Additional CSS.

    /* Indent submenu on mobile */

    .main-navigation .sub-menu .menu-item a {
        padding-left: 20px;
    }

    With the blog exercept block, is there a way to remove the word “continue” that gets jammed onto the end of the excerpt and just keep the “read more” link? The page I’m referencing is here: https://jessicalynnehenkle.com/longform-essays/

    Yes, so the excerpt will show the excerpt of the post, if an excerpt isn’t added, then it will rely on the content of the post, and so Continue is added when a sentence is broken.

    My advice would be to utilise the excerpt field in the post as seen here:

    Additionally, this is also the meta description for the post as well, and so search engines will look favourably upon the content. I would aim for an excerpt to be around 156 characters in length if SEO is important to you.

    I hope this is good advice and helps!

    Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Thanks so much! It turns out the theme does differentiate the secondary menu items on mobile (with a hyphen). It just doesn’t render that way on the mobile view when you’re in the Customize panel or in responsive design mode on a desktop browser. But on an actual mobile device, it does.

    Thanks also for the tip about the post excerpt section. That worked great. Really appreciate the help and prompt response!
