Mobile Reader displays Image other than featured image

  • Unknown's avatar

I host a weekly forum in which other bloggers participate by sending in a pair of images – a before image and the image after post-processing. I use individual galleries for each combination and learned that the Reader will display a gallery over a featured image, so I put my gallery first in the post. Then I choose a featured image of my own after photo to display on my blog. I’m deliberate in my choices as I don’t want to incorrectly attribute someone else’s photos as my work.

So I’m unhappy to have discovered that the mobile reader ignores all I have done and seems to choose the very last photo from the last displayed photo gallery in the post. This means that my post shows up with someone else’s image.

Can you explain to me why this happens? Is this a glitch in the coding for the mobile reader? Is there a workaround to prevent this from happening?

    Thanks so much!

    Hi there,

I’m sorry the featured image in the mobile Reader isn’t using the image you expected. Are you viewing the Reader in your mobile browser (e.g. Safari on an iPad/iPhone) or are you using one of the WordPress mobile apps?

Also, could you send me a link to one of the posts where you saw this come up? That will help me investigate this for you. Thanks!

Rachel, thanks so much for replying! The issue occurs in the Reader when viewing on my iPad/iPhone using the mobile app WordPress for iOS. When viewing the Reader in my mobile browser, all is fine – my first photo gallery shows up, as anticipated.

I updated my post a number of days ago by inserting another gallery of my own two images at the end, with my desired photo being the last one. I figured it was worth a try to see if, upon update, the Reader would choose my intended image. I just scrolled back and found that, while the post itself updated, the original “incorrect” image still appears.

Here are two posts where I first became aware of the issue (I’m not certain if it happened prior to these two posts as I was only verifying the content on my desktop Reader):

Again, many thanks. I’m eagerly anticipating your reply!

    Hi Stacy,

Thanks for sharing those details! I checked in with our team, and they are working on the iOS app to make sure that the Reader supports galleries in a better way — watch for that in a future update to the app. :) That update will make the iOS Reader more closely match the Reader in your mobile or desktop browser in terms of what image it selects to go with your post.

We don’t have an exact timeline for when that update will come out, as the team is still working on that feature, but it’s on our radar! Let me know if there’s anything more I can do to help in the meantime.

Thanks, Rachel, that’s good to know. It took me a while to track down how the Reader in my browser selects an image when galleries are involved (ie it bypasses the selected featured image and chooses the first gallery, f there is more than one). Having the mobile app work the same way will eliminate confusion. In the meantime, knowing how the mobile app currently selects an image when galleries are involved will be very helpful. Can you confirm if I am correct that the mobile app selects the very last photo from a posted gallery? AND if there is more than one gallery, it chooses the very last photo from the very last posted gallery?

    Thanks!

    Hi Stacy,

Great questions — I’m checking with our team about this and will let you know as soon as I have more information about it. :)

    Hi Stacy,

Our team let me know that the iOS app doesn’t currently pick any particular image for the Reader, so there isn’t a way to guarantee that a specific one will be used. However, they have assured me that an upcoming version of the app will reliably use your featured image in the Reader — once that version comes out, you’ll be able to make sure that’s the image that appears, rather than an image selected from one of your post’s galleries.

    I hope this helps!

Rachel, you’ve been a huge help. Thanks!

I’ll end with one last FYI about the mobile app that you may want to pass along to your team – if a post is changed after publication, the mobile Reader doesn’t update. Let me clarify with an example: I had a scheduled post this morning that I had edited last night but forgot to hit the update button. It published with the unedited version. I went into my desktop editor this morning and hit the update button and the post updated on the desktop reader, but it never changed on the mobile app. Here’s the post just in case: http://visualventuring.com/2014/08/20/pine-tree/

I don’t know if the team is aware of this, so thought I’d bring it up as well since they’re working on an update!

    Again, many thanks!

    Hi Stacy,

You’re welcome. :) I’ll definitely let our team know about that issue you’ve run into with posts not updating in the app’s Reader. Thanks for letting me know about that!

    Hi Stacy,

I wanted to let you know that our team launched an update to the WordPress app for iOS, and it should fix the featured image issue. Please give it a spin and let me know if you continue to have trouble with that. :)

The team is continuing to look at the other issue you mentioned (posts not updating in the app’s Reader) to find the best solution for that. Thanks again for letting us know about these issues!

    Hi, Rachel,

Thanks for the heads-up! I will definitely let you know what happens – my newest post for the weekly forum is set to publish at 8 AM this morning. I’m keeping my fingers crossed :)

Rachel, it worked!!! Both the featured image and the updates to the Reader. As it turned out, I really needed this last ability today as a submission for my post got caught in the cloud somewhere and I didn’t receive it until this morning. I inserted it, updated the post, and kept my fingers crossed that it would show up in the mobile reader and it did – instantly!

Thanks to the team for their work on these issues. I ran into a few others in my blogging universe who have grappled with the featured image issue and they’ll be delighted to hear that it’s fixed. I hope WP will be sending out details of this update to alert all as you’re going to make alot of people very happy :)

Again, many, many thanks. WP is the best!

    Best,
    Stacy

You’re very welcome, Stacy! Thanks so much for the kind words — I’ve passed them on to the developers who work on the app. :)
