Mobile version is very small

  • Unknown's avatar

I have enabled mobile version on my website in ‘appearance’ but it comes up so small on a mobile that it is unreadable. Others I know using the same theme (Twenty eleven) have a much more visible version of their site. How can I make mine look bigger?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

I have tested the Twnety Eleven theme and in my case it looks the same as in yours. Width, images, fonts are the same sizes. Could you specify which element seem too small and unreadable to you?

    Let me know!

Hi there and thanks for the quick reply. Everything appears too small, not any specific element. The fonts, the headings – tiny. The menu button top left is so small I didn’t even see it at first. My friend’s website using the same theme looks fine on the same mobile phone, so it can’t be the settings on the phone. I must be missing something in settings or appearance – what could it be?

  • Can you tell me the adress of your friend’s website?

  • If possible check please your site on a different mobile and let me know how it looks like.

Hi there Dariaze, my friend’s website is galleryrunner.com and it looks fine on my mobile phone. He has also checked my website gymstars.co.uk on his phone and he has the same problem – it is minuscule, unreadable without zooming in massively. Many thanks for your help in this matter. Sarah

  • Hi,

ok, so the website is gymstars.co.uk, not baldwinsarah.wordpress.com (which works perfectly fine on mobile). I can see the issue now.

The problem in galleryrunner.com is the frameset HTML element, which creates a frame to display baldwinsarah.wordpress.com. The frameset HTML tag is not supported anymore.
galleryrunner.com is built in a different way.

For more support you need to post here https://wordpress.org/support/
This forum is a support for sites hosted here in WordPress.com (like baldwinsarah.wordpress.com, but it works fine). Your website (galleryrunner.com) is a self hosted version of WordPress.

Mind the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

What we could do here in WordPress.com is to map a domain, that you already own (gymstars.co.uk) to point to your website here (baldwinsarah.wordpress.com).

Another option is to transfer the domain to WordPress.com. This way both website and domain would be managed in one place.

It would work like now, but without the frameset problem. Both options would require any of the paid plans.

I know it can be overwhelming. If you have any more questions about it, let me know. I hope it helps you!

    Hi again,

thank you for your detailed reply. I did not know that gymstars.co.uk was also baldwinsarah.wordpress.com. They are the same website and you can clearly see the difference.

I am aware of the difference between wordpress.org and wordpress.com. However galleryrunner.com is the same as mine – wordpress.com. So we don’t need to get involved with wordpress.org at all.

But please forget about galleryrunner now. I just mentioned it as an example of how my site should look in mobile. All I want to do is make gymstars.co.uk look exactly the same as baldwinsarah.wordpress.com. They are the same website, so you can see I have already “pointed” the domain name gymstars to my wordpress site baldwinsarah. So how do I make it the same appearance?

I feel there must be a simple solution and I am not getting it.

    Many thanks for your help,
    Sarah

  • So maybe it’s a problem with mapping, but I am not sure. I added the modlook tag, so the Staff sees this post.

  • Hi –

The issue here is that gymstars.co.uk has not been properly connected to WordPress.com.

It looks like some type of iframe or domain masking is in place – but it’s not the proper way to go about things.

You’ll want to follow these steps, and set up the domain mapping for gymstars.co.uk.

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Once that has been done, you’re site is going to look normal on mobile views.

    Hi there,

thanks for the info. I connected gymstars.co.uk to wordpress.com back in 2013, could the length of time since then be why it is not working now? Because I don’t understand how it is not properly connected, when it IS connected.

I just went through the instructions for linking/mapping my domain, and it comes up with a price of $98 which seems quite high. Despite the window before it saying:

“Map your domain without moving it from your current registrar.
Domain registration and billing will remain at your current provider
Manage some domain settings at your current provider and some at WordPress.com
Requires changes to the domain’s DNS
Free with your plan, but registration costs at your current provider still apply”

Please note it says “Free with your plan” but then it takes me directly to a PayPal checkout requesting $98! And what does “Requires changes to the domain’s DNS” mean? What is DNS?

Does all this mean that in order for my site to load properly on a mobile (it looks fine on desktop and tablet), it can’t be free? Even with all those annoying ads on it?

I would be grateful for clarification here.
    Many thanks, Sarah

  • Hi there,

@dariaze is absolutely right. So, you are currently using a domain masking feature, which allows you to show one URL in the browser’s address bar (gymstars.co.uk), while another website’s content is actually loaded.

As staff-zinnia mentioned, domain masking uses the <frameset> tag within an iframe, but <frameset> was actually deprecated in HTML 5. So, no current browser supports the <frameset> tag, and that is why your mobile phone is not displaying the site properly.

To properly set up your site for both web and mobile, I would suggest either mapping your site over to WordPress.com as staff-zinnia suggested, or transfer the domain over to WordPress.com so that your domain and site are located in the same place.

Our personal plan contains either domain subscription options and that is only for $48 a year (domain subscription included for free for first year).

Hope that helps. Let us know if you have any questions.

Thank you Darnell. So it appears that what I set up in 2013 is no longer valid. I had no idea I was using a domain masking feature.

So I need to pay to get the masking removed and set up my website properly for mobile. However, I still think the prices quoted ($48 and $98 per year) are too high.

My friend has two wordpress.com sites, one of which uses the domain mapping service, which costs him $13 per year. The other uses domain registration which costs $18 per year. They are both current and up to date. I have screenshots of his invoices but don’t see a way to upload images to this comment area.

So why am I being charged so much more? Where do I find these cheaper options?

    Many thanks for your advice.
    Sarah

  • Hi Sarah, we stopped offering those options years ago as they don’t sufficiently cover our costs to host, maintain, and support them. People who had those options already were grandfathered in, but we no longer sell them.

You are welcome to continue using a free site until you’re ready to upgrade to Personal, though. And once you upgrade, domain mapping is free.

Thank you supernovia. The problem is my free site doesn’t work properly on a mobile phone, although it is fine on desktop or tablet. (See earlier comments). So I guess I will just have to bite the bullet and pay the price. Grrr.

  • The problem is my free site doesn’t work properly on a mobile phone,

It’s not your free site that’s the problem, but rather the way you’re displaying it at your custom domain. If you remove the domain masking and just use the free WordPress.com address, it will work fine.

  • Unknown's avatar

OK thanks. I’m slightly confused however – how do I remove the domain masking? Do you mean, change the website name to baldwinsarah.wordpress.com – or gymstars.wordpress.com? In any case, this means I lose the website address gymstars.co.uk, doesn’t it? Which I would like to retain – and I can only do that by buying into a plan?

Apologies for any confusion on my part. I set this website up in 2013 and abandoned it for a few years, so I understand things have changed since then.

Your help in this matter is much appreciated.

  • @baldwinsarah you could do a non-masked redirect, so that when people visit gymstars.co.uk it redirects to the free address, without trying to display gymstars.co.uk in the address bar. Given that any SEO you have is likely on the free addresses anyway (as masked redirects are also bad for SEO), that could work well for you. Then you could upgrade and map the domain when you’re ready.

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi supernovia, thank you for your input, this sounds promising. Only thing is, I don’t know how to do a non-masked direct. I have searched the forums and the only thing I can find is something to do with a Wix site – I have no idea if that is what I need in this case. Is it?

I fear this is beyond my very limited technical knowledge and I don’t want to guess. I need a precise step-by-step guide to show me how to do it – can you provide a link that shows exactly what I need to do?

I fully intend to upgrade my site in due course, but in the meantime anything you can do to help make it look better while I am building the content would be much appreciated. Thank you.

  • I can’t quite tell who the redirect is through by looking at the info I’ve got. But it seems like one of these should be right:

    https://www.namecheap.com/support/knowledgebase/article.aspx/385/2237/how-to-redirect-a-url-for-a-domain

If that does not work, please try this:

Choose unmasked, and choose 301 if possible.
