Mobile view on Twenty Twelve
-
Is it possible to get the mobile view that is available on my wordpress.com site also available on my self-hosted wordpress site (I have two similar sites one at wordpress.com and one self-hosted). Is there a plugin available or some other way of doing this perhaps.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there!
The theme Twenty Twenty is responsive, that means that it will automatically adapt to the size of the screen but to make sure all the settings are correct on your site, you may want to seek help on the community forums:
https://wordpress.org/support/forums/
Because WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two entirely separate entities, we cannot access files or data for sites that are hosted elsewhere, so WordPress.com staff can only assist with sites that are hosted on our servers. You can read more about the differences between WordPress.org software and WordPress.com here:
http://wordpress.org/support/ is also a great resource for sites using the open-source WordPress.org software.

Yes I know it’s responsive. But I prefer the mobile specific theme offered in conjunction with the Twenty Twelve theme at WordPress.com as another option for the end-user. What I’m asking is how if possible can I get that same mobile-specific option installed on my self-hosted site so that it functions the same as my WordPress.com site ?
Many Thanks

Can you please post a screenshot of what are you referring to? You can use an online tool for that (such as https://snipboard.io/) and paste the link in your reply.

Perhaps we can provide better help in knowing what exactly it is about the current mobile view that you want to change?
For example, spacing and some design things can be changed through CSS.
-
Let’s not persue that particularly. But whilst on the subject of CSS edits. Is there a simple CSS edit I can do to have the buttons in the main menu displayed as centred rather than left justified )on the PC/tablet versions). And would the changes be over-riden on future updates.
-
Typically you can change alignment with CSS. The only button in that screen shot is the
searchone. -
The buttons I’m talking about now are not in that screenshot – I’m now talking about the main menu buttons and asking how to edit the CSS to centre that menu in the PC/tablet views of the main theme.

I’ve managed to make the CSS edits to the navigation menu alignment on my main self-hosted version of the site, which is great. I can’t do CSS editing on the wordpress.com version of the site without a paid upgrade as I already have a paid version of the site elsewhere and don’t really want to have anything important at wordpress.com. Going on to more general aspects of the main Twenty Eleven theme: my main gripe is that the text size is slightly too small and the line spacing slightly too wide on mobile compared to the mobile-specific option at wordpress.com. But it’s not so bad that I want to spend any substantial time editing CSS. I’ve not even shared my wordpress.com site publicly in the past as it’s been used mainly as a developmental environment to do things like trialling new themes etc. The only reason I’m thinking of sharing it now is because of this mobile-specific theme option not available on the self-hosted version. It would be nice if this feature was available on the self hosted version, but I guess this is a wordpress.com thing that you’re not going to make more widely available. I think I will make the link to my wordpress.com site publicly available but with the recommendation that it’s only used for the mobile-specific theme option. I have a feeling used to be available on jet pack but has now been removed on the grounds that the main themes are now sufficiently responsive that the alternative themes are no longer useful (obviously I don’t agree). If you’re aware of any alternative to jet pack that I could use I’d be glad of the information.

Hi there,
The link that you provided gives me a 404 error. it sounds like you are referring to the mobile theme?
https://jetpack.com/support/mobile-theme/
You are correct that we have recently deprecated that feature as the 2020 theme is already a responsive theme. I cannot see what you are going for since I do not have a site URL or the provided screenshot. If you prefer to share the information in private, please reach out to us at
help@wordpress.com.Thanks,

I just wanted to know which plug in to use to allow me to run (on my self-hosted wordpress equivalent) the mobile-specific theme that comes as an add-on to the main twenty twelve theme at wordpress.com. I’m not sure what this add-on theme is called or if there is any plugin available or not (it MAY have been previously available through the jet pack plug in but it has been withdrawn from that plug in now anyway).
-
Correct, it was available via the Jetpack plugin, but it is no longer available as it has been deprecated.
-
So can you tell me if it is available elsewhere – a simple no will do if you don’t know or you know that it’s not available.
-
I did check and it is not available anywhere else from what I have seen. There is huge push to update your theme if it isn’t responsive, as opposed to installing the Mobile Theme.
Thanks,

Thank you that’s all I needed to know. The thread can now be ended. My theme is responsive (it’s Twenty Twelve and fully up to date) – it’s just that I wanted the additional theme as well in exactly the same way that it is offered on wordpress.com sites, including my own, as an add-on to the main theme) – I thought I’d clarified this in my early posts but maybe not.
