Modify front page text box on Sela theme

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello, I am wondering if the text box which floats over the main image on the Sela custom front page format can be modified via CSS? I would like to reduce the blank space a bit at top and bottom of the box, and also make that white ground more transparent so the photo behind is a bit more visible.

    One other thing – when I am logged in and working on my site, is there any way of viewing as a reader would see it? For instance, right now I see that “edit” cue at the foot of the text box – and I wonder if that kind of active-editor-only cue is part of what is making that box appear unattractively too big. (Right now this site is private prior to going live, so logging out to look ain’t an option).

    thanks

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hey sinthea,

    It sure is possible to make those adjustments using custom CSS :)

    Of course, you would need to be on an active WordPress.com Premium or Business plan to have access to the Custom CSS functionality.

    If you need guidance with the custom CSS, let me know. I’d be happy to help where I can.

    As for viewing your website as a regular visitor while the site is in private mode: You could use a different web browser to create a second account on WordPress.com. You would then grant that new user access to your website, so it’s viewable when logged in.

    This will allow you to edit your site in one browser, and view it from the approved account in the second browser, without the edit links etc.

    Hope that helps. :)

    Hi Aaron, sorry, I should have made clear – BOD Drums is on a premium plan – can you not see that when it’s private? Or maybe not yet, since it was only purchased Wednesday morning? Or because I have loggedin under my own ID rather than the BOD Drums one (though I do have full admin on BOD) … should I do that, come back as BOD before you reveal the secrets of CSS? I will need some guidance, please, I am a bit rusty on it… Thanks. And thanks for the tip re second browser. Will do.

    Hey sinthea,

    Thanks for your reply :)

    I don’t have any access to the WordPress.com infrastructure, as I’m currently just a user like you, so I can only see the message advising that your boddrums.wordpress.com website is private.

    If you wanted, you could invite me to view your site as a private user. I could then provide assistance with the custom CSS mentioned in your first post.

    Details for adding users to a private site: https://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/#invite-people-to-view-your-private-blog

    Otherwise, just let me know once the site is publicly viewable, and I’ll check it out. No invite will be needed once the site is public :)

    Ok, let’s hold on this for the moment then – let me finish getting all content and photos in and the site live, hopefully within the next 24 hours, then I can tickle this thread again for your help, Ok? Thank you very much!

    Hi @sinthea, I can see your private site, so I took a look and let’s start with this and see what you think. Go to Customize > CSS, delete all the informational text in that window, and paste in the following custom CSS.

    .home .hero .entry-header {
      display: none
    }
    .home .hero-container-inner article {
      padding-top: 0;
      padding-bottom: 0;
    }
    .home .hero-container-inner .entry-meta {
      display: none;
    }

    Hello Sacred Path! I only this moment went live so I am going to let the dust settle (and get some sleep) then have a bash at this tomorrow… thank you for the coding, will report back.

    Just did that – worked perfectly, much better balance of space top and bottom, thank you!! Take care. And you can close this as resolved now. thanks.
