Modifying a Theme
-
I am very happy with twenty fourteen theme particularly how it has allowed me to have a left column pop out menu instead of the header menu but the default width of my centre column is far too narrow & it automatically hyphenates many words. I have set page width to full page but the above results, also I do not want to have a right side column but I have it by default. Could you please help? Site is http://kangarawatersresidents.org/

Hi there,
Unfortunately the size of the main content area is built into the theme and would be very difficult to change. Currently the main column width is 474 as seen in the support doc for the theme here:
https://wordpress.com/themes/twentyfourteen/
If you need a wider layout and that is more important than the other features of the theme, it would be best to change themes:
I did a quick search and found that these themes may be more suitable:

http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/writr/
http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/confit/
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Hi Grace, Sorry but I really need to use “2014” theme for the features it offers. Since you replied I have purchased the Custom upgrade & used the CSS edit facility to make the centre content wider, but I am still in trouble. I can make it wider but this does away with both side panels & puts my left panel menu into the footer. I have looked at other themes but I want to use 2014. Could you lead me to a solution please?

Hi there,
Try posting your question in the CSS Customization Forum and they may be able to help:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization
Please remember that changing your layout can break the display on mobile/tablet devices, so please be careful when adding CSS and check how it looks on all devices.
Hope it works out!

Hi Grace,
Thanks, I have fixed that problem now thanks to a member on google who detailed some CSS code which was great. I now still have the same problem on just one page, my Google Calendar embedded into Word Press at this page, http://kangarawatersresidents.org/notices/special-events/ would be very pleased if you could help! -
Hi there,
I see that you were able to embed the calendar. Can you please clarify what you need help with?
Thanks

On 2014 theme, I am pleased to have increased the content page width from the default 474 p to 800p, but on my google calendar page my text displays at 800 but the embedded google calendar is still only about 474p. In google I have set width to 800 & the google embedding code shows 800. I use the same google code in my other bobh37.wordpress.com site & it provides the correct full 800 width.

Hi there,
You can do this by editing CSS like you did before. Please go to Appearance > Customize > CSS and trying adding this:
#post-2312 embed, iframe, object, video { width: 800px; }Cheers!

Hi Grace,
Thank you for your expert assistance. I added your code to CSS & it fixed the width problem.
