Modifying Display of Archived Posts

    Others have mentioned that they’ve wanted to show the full post when going through archives, rather than just the truncated post. I want the full post to display as well. From what I understand, the shortened post is part of the template, which – if I understand correctly – we can’t modify.

    Alright. Then if I can’t change anything to make the archived posts show in full, then I’d like to ask for a viable solution to the following problem:

    Since my blog is, well, a blog and moves chronologically over time, I’d like to direct my readers to the first post without forcing them to click click click back to the beginning. My settings have one post per page. When I post a link to my first post in the sidebar (using a text widget), and you click through, it shows the post in full but it doesn’t offer an option to click forward to the subsequent post. (I’d post a link to what I mean here, but my writing is fairly explicit and potentially offensive.)

    Alternatively, I could link to the last page of my March archive, which does have the option to click forward to the next post. But it only shows part of the post. Okay, so you click for the full post — no option to click forward. So it looks like my only real option is to link to the first post through the archive, and expect readers to click the post open, then hit the back button to have the option to click forward to the next post.

    You guys are killing me here. How can I show my posts in full while allowing the reader to click forward and read each post in succession (and chronological progression)?

    Change the template. If it’s template-dependent, picking a new one will fix that.

    Seems like most theme designers like only displaying a partial bit of the post on the archive pages as well as teh search results and the monthly.

    I don’t like it either…

    @debauchette
    Almost all of the themes treat archives in the same manner. I’m saying “almost” even though I can’t think of a single one that doesn’t but there may be one out there.
    Normally only an excerpt is provided rather than the whole post and your readers click on a “more” tag at the end of the excerpt to get the whole post.
    You can consult the theme reviews that have been done to see if you can locate a theme that gives archives “the full treatment” and here is the link to the reviews http://engtech.wordpress.com/tools/wordpress/wordpress-theme-reviews/
    You will have to check through them and find one that’s more to your liking. The other alternative is this one – re-ordering your posts to read like a book http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/11/04/how-to-write-a-book/

    I’m using Regulus and Misty Look on two of my blogs, and they don’t seem to use excerpts on the archive pages. Maybe none of my posts are long enough, but i have a few that i think are quite long.

    Just my 2¢

    you can of course, always put a link into each blog yourself, using the ‘insert link’ button that links to any other blog, forward or backward. Perhaps labour intensive, but once you have put them all in you’d only have to remember to do it each time you post.
