Modifying home page: summary of latest posts
-
I would like to have a summary of 4 latest posts on my home page, two side by side and 2 on top of each other (I have a bilingual blog so ideally I’d like to have 2 latest Finnish posts on top of each other and 2 latest English posts on top of each other).
They layout for the summary could be something similar to this: http://one-penny-trip.com/
How could I have it on my home page so that it would automatically update the latest posts on my home page (2 English and 2 Finnish posts)? I have tried to look from the forum and internet but any html code I have found isn’t working.
If I can’t get summary of latest posts in 2 columns, I would appreciate if someone could advice how to make them to show even in 1 column on my home page? :)
Thanks for any help.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Are you aware of the.,limitations of CSS editing? You can use it to change appearance only. You cannot use it to change the way any theme is designed to function.
Does the Custom Design upgrade let me edit HTML?
No. The Custom Design upgrade allows you to edit fonts, colors, and CSS only. You can change the appearance of a theme, but not its HTML markup or PHP code.
read the rest at http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questionsHere’s a link to the detailed theme description page

So does it mean there is no way to have a summary of the latest posts appearing to the home page in any way?

I don’t help with CSS editing. Staff and other Volunteers do. Please wait patiently for their assistance.

Hi there, we can help you do this. First you have to make the following changes in your dashboard at Settings > Reading
1. Set “Blog pages show at most” to 4.
2. At “To infinity and beyond” uncheck the box.
3. Save your changes. Then add the following CSS to the end of your custom CSS.
.blog article { display: none; } .blog .category-blogini-suomeksi, .blog .category-my-blog-in-english { display: block; }What this does is to hide all blog posts from the main blog page and then display the two categories only.
I notice you have a home page also created with no content. That page can be deleted and the “Home” item removed from the menu. You can then change the label on “All Posts” to Home and move that item to the left at Appearance > Menu.
I also notice that the text in your right sidebar is right at the edge of your greyish background. You can add the following to give a little left and right margin to that text for easier reading.
.widget { margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; } -

Thanks so much @thesacredpath for your tips. I made all the changes on both topics as you suggested and the blog starts to look as I want it to look – simple. I will come up with new silly ideas anyway as I go along! :)
About the home page I was still wondering, why it’s still showing 2 latest posts on each category as full posts even if I ticked “show summary” box on the reading page. I’d like to have a short summary for each post, where you can see the title, a thumbnail, perhaps couple first sentences and “read more” link. Is this possible somehow?
What comes to the header image… it is maybe too big now. If I leave the settings of the header as they were, but widen the text area, the header is located on the left. Is it possible to keep the header the same size as it used to be (or only a little bit bigger) but center the location of the header?
Thanks again for your help.

The “Show Summary” at Settings > Reading is for the syndicated RSS feed, not for the blog itself.
You can try using your own excerpts to see if your theme supports them, or you can use the read more tag in your individual posts.
For the header image, remove this
.site-header img { width: 1184px; }and add the following to center it.
.header-image-link { text-align: center; } -
Thanks again @thesacredpath. I used the more tag option, but is it possible to display a thumbnail with it on the home page?

You can insert an image into the post above the more tag. It would appear below the title and the date.
If you wanted to give that a try, post back here after you have one and I can look at the possibility of moving that image up and to the left of the post title and limit that change to only the home page.

I have done it now! :) So if you have any tips regarding the appearance of the posts on the home page, they would be very much appreciated.
Another question: By using more tag the posts are showing as summaries also in the category pages. I assume this can’t be changed? What I mean is that the post would display as summaries only on home page but as full article on their own pages (e.g. blog in English).
Thanks again!

@livenowdreamlater, you cannot use the read more only on the main page, it will also show on categories, archives and tags pages.
Your site is looking great! I like the ff market font for the titles and I love the dark blue of the text. Very clean and easy to read.

Thanks so much @thesacredpath for your comments, you just made a big smile on my face! :) Your comments mean a lot to me. And in case you (or anyone else) have any suggestions for improvements or anything at all (like spelling mistakes on the English version), please don’t hesitate to say them aloud!
