"modlook" : Comment with invalid mail add – Why is it possible ?!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,
I’m french – The french moderator ask me to post here to have an answer.

Tag : “Modlook” – On my blog (and on others I know) I have someone (troll/flamer) who is commenting with an Invalid e-mail add ! (I went through the “abuse” sce of the FAI in France).

    1) I use the “blacklist” and I put his add and so on, in “safe” setting (Not in”strict” due to false positives sometime)
    2) I know I can use “Users must be registered and logged in to comment”, but there is no more comments out of WP!

So, why on the comment form asking to give “Name and Add, etc..”, at least, the “mail-add” is not verified as “valid” ? Is it a bug ?

Or may be … the “person” create one and erase it just after comment and doing that each time she/he wants to comment…. to be quite…. ???

    I’m not sure you have a solution, but I ask … :)

Suggestion : It would be great if we can have a plug-in as “put the troll in the cave” which make the troll is believing he has correctly published/commented and that everybody can read him/her, but in fact, the comment is directly put into the trash ! :) (Someone said me that was existing before…. why not anymore ?)

Many thank in advance for you help if it’s possible….

    Kate
P.S. If you need the concerned add and other details please ask

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’ve tagged this for Staff to address your comments about the Discussion settings.

Meanwhile, you could moderate all your comments so that they would not appear until after you’ve reviewed and approved them. It may be more work for you, but perhaps worth it if you have a constant problematic commenter.

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/2/#before-a-comment-appears

Since obviously you will not be approving their comments, you can trash them directly from the Comment Moderation dashboard. Once their comments stop being visible, the reason (trolls need attention) for them to keep commenting is removed.

Thank you for you answer, and for tagging for Staff :)

Because your answer is not what I need. As I have said in my question : I know how to use the blacklist “safe” and “strict”, and I use it, and also I know how to moderate and I use when I need .
My question was : How and/or why is it possible for someone to comment using a “false and invalid” mail add?”
I wait for answer from the staff

    Thks again

How and/or why is it possible for someone to comment using a “false and invalid” mail add?”

We try to make it as simple as possible for folks to leave comments. This means letting unregistered users comment on your site.

If you want to let only registered users comment, head over to My Sites -> Settings -> Discussion, and select the option, “Users must be registered and logged in to comment”.

Thank you for your answer, but I knew your solution.

If I understand, to have security against dishonest people and punisable action (which become unpunishable…) I have to reduce my visibility.

Thank you again and have a good day :)

    My 2¢/
Although the OP has marked this issue as resolved, I’d like to clarify one point.

How and/or why is it possible for someone to comment using a “false and invalid” mail add?”

If you allow your site visitors to log in with an only an email address, there is no way to verify that the email address really exists and the user is who they say they are.

Requiring your commenters to log in with an online account (WP, Twitter, FB or Google) is the only way that an email address/user can be verified vis-a-vis those services.

If by “reducing my visibility” you mean that you will have less people commenting on your posts, it may happen if you require a log-in of some kind, but it will ensure that your commenters are who they say they are. There really isn’t any other effective way that this can be done.

Thanks for your more precise answer and my appologies because I have totally forgotten the fact that the comments are possible with FB, etc.
So, I’m going to install this setting immediatelly.
    Kindest rgds
