Modularity Lite: Background theme disappeared when I paid for CSS upgrade

Hi. I’m just getting started on a new site using Modularity Lite. I had uploaded a new background, but realized I needed to make more substantial changes so paid the ~$15 for the CSS upgrade.

Problem is, once I did that the background completely disappeared on me – now it’s solid black and even the semi-transparent content box is missing. I’ve tried switching to another theme and then switching back, reverting back to the original CSS and reuploading a new background but none of it works – it’s still solid black.

I was able to go into the CSS and change the background color to white, but I’m still missing the texture and the overlay box, both of which are key elements.

Would really appreciate any help towards fixing this – very frustrating to pay for something to improve the site and have the whole thing fall apart on me instead

I should also note that my CSS skills are somewhere between 0 and minimal. I’ve tinkered with WP enough to know a little bit, but am very mystified as to why this happened.

Did you by chance past the entire stylesheet into the CSS edit window?

First thing is that your background image file size is 3MB, which is way too large. I downloaded it and optimized it for the web and was able to get it down to 416k (which is actually still too large, but at least much better). Here is the link to the optimized image which if you are going to use this image, you should use.

Hi. Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, I did paste the entire stylesheet into the CSS edit window. Would that have caused the blackout? I don’t recall seeing anything that said not to do that but may have missed it.

And thanks for optimizing my background image. I should have mentioned that it was just there as a temporary placeholder, but the new one will definitely help. That wouldn’t have caused the page to go black though, would it? It was working fine before I got the CSS upgrade.

Yes, that would have caused your problem. NEVER do that.

    Two questions then:
    1. how do I fix it?
    2. what do I do then? only paste bits at a time?

    thanks-

Delete all the CSS code from the CSS edit window (you can paste it into a plain text file for reference and safe keeping) and then put only the specific selectors, and only the specific declarations that you are adding or changing and then make sure that “add to existing…” is selected. This way of doing it has a benefit too as down the road it will be very easy to see what you have changed should you need to go back in and add or change things again.
