Modularity Lite Theme: weirdness with background pictures

  I am trying to select a background picture in Modularity Lite. I would like a single picture to fill the screen in background. Weirdly, some pictures will do that, & some are either very small or tiled when I install them, even though I am using the identical settings in the background section of the Appearance controls! Please tell me how to make all pictures fill the background screen (at least horizontally), or if that can’t be done, why are different pictures behaving so differently even thought the controls haven’t been changed? Thanks for any help, as I am quite puzzled by this.
