Monetize blog question

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello all. I have a couple of questions regarding using WordAds that I will be thankful if the forum or Admin can help with. I am trying to determine if my page is worth going through the steps of monetizing.

    1) Minimum traffic requirement: I do understand that the actual number is not publicly disclosed, so I wanted to ask the Admin or anyone that knows if my 2016 monthly average (to date) of 19K page views would meet the requirement.

    2) Upgrade to allow WordAds: From a quick review of the WordPress plans, it appears right know that I will have to upgrade to Premium ($8.25/months) before I can apply for WordAds. Is this the only available option. I seemed to recall (at least in some convos in the forum) where buying a domain for ~$17/year was sufficient. If you have any guidance on any alternatives, I will gratefully appreciate. Essentially, if possible, I am trying to have the cost offset by the ad revenue, but at 8.25/month ($99/year), I am not sure based on my current traffic (about 50% from Africa, mainly Madagascar), if this is feasible.

Thank you again for your insight. The site is acousticgasy.wordpress.com

Thanks for providing those details, and this is a great question to ask.

My suggestion is to register a custom domain with our WordPress.com Personal Plan. This is the cheapest way to register a custom domain and it is also a requirement of the WordAds program.

After you get the custom domain setup, be sure you set it as your Primary Domain.

    Then apply to WordAds.

Your earnings will be based on the demographics of your visitors including location. North American views tend to be the most lucrative, however, we accept sites from other countries.

Please reply with any additional questions :)

    Hi Lizkarkoski:

Thank you for the quick reply. This is very helpful. I didn’t realize that the Personal plan ($2.99/month) was enough.

In the Choose your WordPress.com flavor page, the “monetize your blog” option doesn’t show up until the Premium section. Or does “monetize” include other ad revenue options other than WordAds?

    Kind regards

    Acoustik

  • The WordAds application requires a custom domain. The most affordable way to do this is through the Personal Plan. You would still need to apply to WordAds with this option.

If you upgrade to WordPress.com Premium you can simply turn on WordAds for your site.

WordAds is the only advertising permitted on WordPress.com.
