The latter is your answer. Here’s an more complete explanation. In a nutshell no blogger initiated advertising, retailing or reselling the work created or services provided by anyone other than yourself is allowed on free hosted wordpress.COM blogs. E-commerce transactions via shopping carts and the like cannot be conducted on free blogs from and being free hosted by wordpress.COM

The advertising exceptions noted in support documentation are for high traffic blogs that qualify for and are accepted into the Ad Control program, and for extremely high traffic blogs that qualify and are accepted into the paid VIP hosting program.

If you do require an ecommerce site, advertising and/or affiliate links you can hire a web host and get a free software install from http://wordpress.org Refer to > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Just something to keep in mind: Few bloggers make enough money to cover their yearly hosting and domain registration costs unless they have the right subject matter that brings in those that are likely to click on ads, and also brings in enough of them.

Indeed the most common reason for leaving WordPress.com and self hosting a WordPress.org blog that I’m aware of is the desire to make money by blogging. Well, if your free hosted WordPress.com blog does not currently attract 1,000 – 1,500 unique visitors every day, and your traffic stats do not demonstrate a growth trend, and your SEO is not up in the 90 percentile range, then it’s unlikely that you will make a significant income from blogging. You will be lucky if you make enough to cover web hosting costs. Even a month bloggers with high traffic blogs are only making $5 – 10 from ad clickers and that’s not a net figure. It’s prior to subtracting their web hosting and other self hosting costs. For self-hosting figure an average monthly total cost (including cost of a domain name) of about $10 to $25 generally, but that all depends on storage and bandwidth requirements. And you will be responsible for all upgrades, installations, backups and troubleshooting on a WordPress.org install.

    Honestly:

There are many ways to make money from a blog: which were you interested in? Some are possible here, some are not. We need to know if you’ve done your research and decided on a business model before we can advise you whether or not that specific model is viable here.

LoveAshley.net is a place for me to write and post whatever is on my mind, or anything that I find interesting and want to share. I won’t be getting extremely personal, since I am a bit of a private person. …

Not a lot of digits in that monetization strategy.

Thanks for all the great info. This just stopped me from stressing out over the whole issue of ‘monetizing’ – a word I first heard today…LOL My blog is two weeks new so maybe I’ll consider moving it to another site like Blogger where a little extra money is possible. Is that allowed?

You can move anywhere you like – WordPress.COM makes it real easy – just export your content from here and import it to where ever you move to. No charge for the export.

Your blog content is your own and you can export it out of your WordPress.com blog into a Blogger blog anytime you please. Do note that the amount of money you make from ad clickers will be pathetically small. Very few blogspot bloggers I know make more than pocket change and Google Adsense does not cut a check and send it until the blog has earned $100.00 US from ad clickers. This can take anywhere from 6 months to a year. Also note that if you do intend to leave it’s best for you to do that very early on, as when you export your WordPress.com content out every link to that content in search engines will be broken. Your new blog will have to start from zero.
