Monetizing your blog

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello everyone,

Here’s the link to my blog http://vimalsuresh,wordpress.com. I started it on November, 2011 and two days back, it crossed the 10,000 mark in blog visits. I have a range of topics in my blog from tech to personal to photography and some lyrics support. Now, I need a guidance on the following to decide what is the better step going forward with the blog.
    1. Should I buy the domain and pay $17 per year so that I can have more control over the content and format of the blog?
    2. I would like to know what are the different options to monetize/earn from the blog. I’m not sure whether adsense will accept the site since some of the posts are written in Malayalam language (unsupported for adsense).
    3. I have heard about WordAds, but its restricted to only selected blogs based on the traffic flow. I don’t know whether my blog will qualify for that as well.
    4. Also, I would like to know whether I will still be restricted from putting ads in the site even after buying the domain from WP.com.

I would appreciate if anyone could shed some light on the above.

    Thanks!

If you purchase a domain mapping upgrade and still have your blog free hosted by WordPress.com then nothing changes except the URL. Please read this > http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/#important-notes-before-upgrading

    2. I would like to know what are the different options to monetize/earn from the blog. I’m not sure whether adsense will accept the site since some of the posts are written in Malayalam language (unsupported for adsense).

Then you will have to hire a web host and set up a WordPress.org install and move your content into it because there’s no blogger initated advertising allowed of free hosted WordPress.com blogs.

You are welcome to apply to have your blog included in the WordAds Program. Here’s the link > http://en.wordpress.com/apply-for-wordads/

However, unless your blog already has a traffic flow of at least 1000 – 1500 viewers per day any income you make on a WordPress.org self hosted blog is negligible. Knowing that the WordAds program means splitting advertising income with WordPress.com means it will be even less than negligible, unless you have a very high traffic blog.

I think WordAds is being opened to lower traffic sites – still in the test stage it looks like – you need to get a lot of traffic to make ads work or you need to have a very niche market with the ability to charge a lot for ads – but as noted above if you want to sell your own ads you need to move off WordPress.COM.

    4. Also, I would like to know whether I will still be restricted from putting ads in the site even after buying the domain from WP.com.

Yes, restrictions still apply. As I said above all that changes is the URL. Please see the information at these links:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/
    http://en.wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/affiliate-links/

I suggest that if these realities are deal breakers for you then you can hire a web host and set up your own self hosted WordPress.org install from http://wordpress.org/

    1) a custom domain does not have any effect on the content or format of your blog.

    2) the ONLY option for monetizing your blog is waiting till staff re-open application to the WordAds program and applying and, if accepted, splitting the revenue 50/50 with WordPress. Since independent blogs don’t usually find it worthwhile until they have 1000 views per day, 2000 views per day seems a reasonable prerequisite before exploring this option.

    3) if you don’t qualify, you have no other monetization options here; at least, none based on ad revenue. If you use your site as a professional portfolio for whatever it is that you do for a living, that could be considered allowable monetization.

    4) yes.

I just read your request about monetizing your blog. first off, google adsense and google adwords are two different things. Adsense will take anyone, as they did me. within a week I had earned over $80 and I go an email saying that my account was closed without any explanation other than “suspicious activity”. I did not click on my own ads, so they can dump you with no reason, meaning if someone wants to mess with you account, all they have to do is go to your site and keep clicking on ads and you lose your account. I never got a penny. Adwords is an entirely different service. You pay them to place ads for your blog. Not a good way to go. I am currently using Amazon Affiliates and click banks. You choose your own products to advertise on your website or blog and you get a percentage of the revenue. In this way, no one can mess with your account by over clicking on your ads. Its up to you how you want to go. I just spend a lot of time of the internet looking at ways to monetize. I haven’t sold anything yet but just signed up with the services I mentioned a couple of days ago. Hope this helps! Peace.

Thank you all for the detailed responses. I have been searching and researching ever since i started this blog on the possibilities of monetizing it. And I kept on seeing mixed reviews from one discussion to another. I got excited when I heard of WordAds but further reading and the response above shows that its only for those elite blogs with a high rate of traffic. So from what I understand from here is that WordPress.com is not yet ready for bloggers to do any sort of monetizing, let alone bringing in adsense, unless you have a sky-high daily traffic. So I will wait and in the meantime, will keep on adding color to the blog and hopefully, more readers! :) . I have no intentions of moving the blog to any other platform due to two reasons – 1) I don’t want to lose any of the features provided by WP.com and don’t wish to clear any stats and blog views it received till now. 2) I really like the current theme and the present look of the blog. So, once more, Thanks guys!

Blogs on whatever platform that do not have high traffic have basically no way of earning money for advertising anyway.
