Monetizing your blog on wordpress

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m fairly sure I already know the answer to this question, but does WordPress allow google adsense or any affliate programs for your blog? I think I read somewhere on WordPress that they would be integrating advertising for bloggers soon. Is there any way to make money using WordPress as a blog host, or will I have to create another blog elsewhere?

    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks

I’ve been here for over two years, and when I got here they were saying that they were saying it was something that may show up in the future. The future is really, really, really big.

Right now, all you can do is sell stuff that you make with your own hands and sell somewhere like an Etsy shop.

Your only choice currently is to go self-hosted. Register a domain name, hire a web host, download and install the wordpress software from wordpress.ORG onto the host and then do your advertising and selling there.

Do be aware that for most people, they do not end up breaking even considering the cost of hosting and the domain registration fees.

You really need to be getting over 1000 hits a day to make anything and then you will probably net a croissant and a designer coffee per month when you consider your expenses.

You are also responsible for all troubleshooting, all upgrades, all maintenance and all backups. If something goes wrong, you have to fix it.

Wow. Thanks for the reply. I’ve been reading up on it for sometime. I’m a writer. I freelance, and I’m working on a memoir-So, I finally decided to make a blog. While I’ve known I wouldn’t make my real money through advertising, I didn’t think it would hurt to try. Doesn’t Blogger allow Google Adsense? Since they are hosted by Google?

Yes, Blogger does allow Google Adsense. However, unless or until one has a traffic stream of 1000 – 1100 hits every day and is in a niche using keywords that have high click rate value returns the income one makes from Adsense will not be significant. Moreover, blogs on free hosted subdomains lack credibility and that impedes their traffic flow.

Making money online or offline involves hard work. And very few bloggers have the degree of expertise required to produce content that brings in the massive number of hits on advertisements that are required to make a living from blogging. Moreover, the economic realities we now face mean that making an income from blogging is bound to become increasingly more difficult.

I don’t think there is a single best way to make money by blogging. I think the nature of the blog, the niche it’s in, and the quality of the contents are all factors that go into selecting the combination of advertising and affiliate plans that may be workable for any given blog.

Google/blogger does allow adsense. It’s in their interest to offer it to their bloggers because it puts millions (probably hundreds of millions) in Google’s pockets and it costs them virtually nothing in comparison.

If I may. I have [haven’t removed them] several blogger blogs with adsense. It took from 02/06 to 11/08 to earn $100.45. Blogger does not pay until you accumulate $100. Because the blogs are active [I no longer post there], I still earn, currently only $7.66 since February. Ads on blogs is not a way to be compensated for your content, although I think tasteful ads here could be more profitable for me than my Blogger blogs–single blog, higher hit rate [not 1K per day though]. Many avoid the Google ad because the result may not be as relevant as your googling the same item. Just my 0.02. –jim

  • I think the first thing to do, if you’re looking for ways to monetize your blog, is stop using words like “monetize”. That road does not lead to a good place. The only thing you’ll monetize is the guy selling the “monetize your blog” scheme.

Annabella: you’re a writer, and you’re working on a book. Use your blog to create an audience for it. Serialize it on your blog. Blog about the writing process. Blog about the publishing industry. That sort of thing. It’ll do a lot more for you than earning a fiver a month from Adsense.

I make a living from my blogs, and that’s solid advice. Who tries to “monetize” a manuscript? It’s the wrong way of thinking about things.

    Also: adsense is a joke.

Jim, thanks for adding your 0.02. I think what you are reporting is what the vast majority of people will experience with adsense or pretty much any other network ad program, and certainly backs up what I have heard from several people.

Timethief, thanks for those links and your input. I’m helping someone out right now that is looking to do some ads on a self-hosted.
