  how do you get the page to just show a portion of your blog post with the option of having “more” listed at the end if someone wants to read the entire article.

  My blog posts can get long so I do not want people to have to scroll through the whole thing if they are not interested in that particular post

  This is the “more tag” or “read more” link. If you are using the visual rich text editor you can insert icon 13 where you want the break to be. http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/15/what-do-all-the-icons-mean/
  If your are using the standard editor then click [more].
