More ads appear than I believe we agreed to.

When ads were first introduced on WordPress, they used to be at the bottom. The message was, ‘Occasionally, some of your visitors may see advertisement here. You can hide these ads completely by upgrading to one of our paid plans.’

    Emphasis on the word ‘here.’

To me, that meant ‘here,’ where the box is, at the bottom of the page. Not interspersed through my post, interrupting the flow, and in an add-on sidebar. No. These are not things that I agreed or agree to.

Yes, I know, I can pay to upgrade. But dammit, everyone uses this same model. Get people looped in with something virtuous and free. Then tell them, ok, we’re going to have to put little ads there to pay for it. So, ok. Not such a big deal. But then they gradually make it more and more sucky to the point that we are practically running clickbait sites, and we are forced to pay to ‘upgrade’ (i.e. to recover what we once had, before the unilateral decision was made to change it).

I want to go on record as being irritated by this. And now you know.
