More Hot blogs?

Greets:
I for one would like to see more than the top 5 viewed blogs on the front page of wp.com. Seems like it’s been nothing but Anousheh Ansari, Scoby, Mary Kay, and Walk in for jobs up there.
Thanks,

Seems like 4 of the 5 are always the same on that list or pretty much always.
I just would like to see something different up there. Maybe even a random list of blogs.

IMO the reason people ask for more than the top 5, 10 or whatever is because thetop 5 rarely change. Thus increasing the number of those shown doesn’t really do a lot for me and probably not for others either.
We could make the fans of the top 5 happy by retaining them and then add in another list based on random selection.
Perhaps using a rotating category “tag” approach would be interesting. For example a random list of 5 cooking blogs one day, followed a random list of 5 sports blogs the next day, followed by a random 5 entertainment blogs the day after that … etc.
What do others think of using that kind of approach to creating a community of new readers by exposure to a variety of interesting wordpress blogs on a vast number of subject “tags” that we may not have noticed previously? -
A random selection of blogs in the “top blogs” list would be interesting to see.
My question, though: Would you prefer a randomly generated list for each user, or a list of 5 (or 10) staying up for a specified time period?

Just to be clear where I’m coming from I won’t allow anyone to choose the “top books” or “top music” or “top people” in my life for me, nor will I alow anyone else to choose my “top blogs” for me. I believe that my “top choices” may be the
bottom choices on the next person’s list.
At present what appears to be the definition of “top-ness” is the number of hits either a “top post” or a “top blog” gets. It’s a popularity poll type of selection. This of course encourages seo and google bait thinking. But IMO the average wordpress blogger may not be thinking in these terms at all and may not be blogging for reasons commensurate with such thinking at all. So I say fine I say let’s keep those “top blogs” and “top posts” links on the dashboard but how about making two additions as well. Let’s feature a random selection reflecting the broad diversity of blogs and posts that are in our wordpress blogging community. In addition I would like to see
(1) a list of a random selection of 5 blogs in a rotating by the day category tag list, regardless of what their stats may reflect, and
(2) another list of a random selection of 5 posts in a rotating by the day category tag list, regardless of what their stats may reflect. -
i’ve listed my blogs with a couple of directories, they all set the counters to zero at the beginning of each week and so you do get to see new sites listed and sometimes even your own :D

I agree! There should be a choice not everyone feels that the same Top 5 Blogs is the only ones that are worth looking at.

I would like to see top 5 blogs ‘with specific tags’ as TT said. like sport, entertainment, movies, food, and so forth. Atleast it will change daily and we can surf through different blogs. WP should select 10 basic tags as I mentioned before and put these on admin page.
Insted of top 5 blogs (current) we should have top 10 post (which is there right now but have occupied more space) … -

Actually some of the blogs do have interesting issues. However, I do not really think wordpress should promote them as the top blogs. While wordpress should allow users to search for blogs with high views, it should not mislead people into believing that the top blogs are tbe best.
And, its the same blogs again and again. Really, how do we characterize top blogs? On the basis of number of views? Isn’t that the same as calling China the strongest nation? They have the highest population, don’t they?
One should be able to differentiate blogs based on the quality which does not necessarily reflect on the number of visitors that the site is able to attract. So, wordpress needs to come with alternative measures to rank the sites.

If you really want to see more than the ‘top’ 5 blogs, then go to the bottom of your dashboard. For some examples, I enjoyed these 2 from the parade of latest posts as they flicked by just now:
http://dinzzz.wordpress.com/
and
http://sparkyanddash.wordpress.com/Please support my simple joy by keeping this random selection.

That’s a really good idea. Let the wordpress.community add tags to blogs to build a user reviewed directory.
Then on the wordpress.com homepage you can subscribe to only the directory tags you are interested in.
I think the tags should be fixed to a sane amount to prevent taggitis
