More insights into website traffic – geography, time on site etc?
-
Hello All,
I’m a newbie here – joined over the weekend! Loving the place so far.
Just an idea (probably, already brought up by somebody in the past):
I was wondering if WP can look at giving us more insights into website traffic? For example, the geography of the visitors, the time spent on the site etc?
I’m technically challenged and don’t want to mess around with the CSS. So this would be such a brilliant feature add!
Thanks,
AN

This is what wordpress.com provides > http://en.support.wordpress.com/stats/
In addition we can use third party Non Javascript stats programs like statcounter, sitemeter, flag counter and these > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2009/10/24/real-time-visitor-tracking-non-javascript-for-blogs/Over time your will publish more posts and there is more data available then you can get the information you seek from http://www.quantcast.com/thephotoimaginarium.com and from http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/thephotoimaginarium.com#

BTW Please note that we cannot use Google Analytics on wordpress.com blogs and no change in this regard is being considered at this time that we Volunteers are aware of. .

Some like SiteMeter will show an IP address, others will reverse the info and show a dot on a map (Cluster Maps) or Flag Counter will show a Flag for each country that visits. Keep in mind that some ISP’s change the IP address of users constantly so IP address are becoming less informative.

i found a plugin that looks like it will do what i want. but, i don’t see a “plugin” option on my dashboard. how do get the “plugin” option to appear?

The visitor trackimg options I posted above do include the IP. However, I wonder what value knowing the IP has for you given these facts.
(1) ISP providers are placing hundreds of us in the same IP block to save money;
(2) All ISP providers use routers and many individuals use routers;
(3) Many of us have dynamic IPs.
So in the final analysis what value does knowing the presumed IP have? In what way do you intend to use that data? -

Thanks to everyone for their tips here, much appreciated :)
Added SiteMeter to my photography website along with the WP stats – looking good so far!

Sitemeter works very well and I have it on my blogs and have had it for years. Please see what I put in bold lettering and choose only to use the instructions provided on that site for wordpress.com blogs. You are attempting to use the Javascript code and it cannot be used on wordpress.com blogs as the software is stripping the code out. Go back to sitemeter and follow the instructions for wordpress.com blogs. -

Yes! Sitemeter works with my site template. Take a look at the bottom of my site: http://www.thephotoimaginarium.comI copy pasted the HTML code as a Widget. Let me know if this doesn’t work for you.

You asked the value of knowing the IP was. For me, it is probably just curiosity killed the cat type thing, but I am able to tell when my friends are reading my blog. I use Statcounter on mine and I can create labels for different IP addresses so I know when certain people are actually reading. I know they do change but it still helps keep a little bit of an eye on who is reading.

I find that invasive but that’s just me as I’m not inclined to track my individual readers. All I’m interested in is found here http://queancast.com and I also use http://alexa.com

@timethief
Thank you so much. I did as you suggested and the SiteMeter is now working fine on my blog. This is one of the few times that I have ever gotten something useful from one of the forums.
