More shortcodes
-
I would love a shortcode I could use on a static page that would display a list of the categories in my blog.
And, another that would list the tags in my blog (not in cloud form).
Not a list of posts, a list of categories and another list of tags that would allow clicking on them like a footer category or tag cloud widget.
I’d also love a shortcode that would put a search field on a static page.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

See:
Pages http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/
Then see:
[display-posts] lets you list posts of a specific category, author, or tag » Full instructions http://en.support.wordpress.com/display-posts-shortcode/ -
I’ve looked that that. Thanks. What I want is not to list posts of a specific category or tag, I want to list:
All tags
All categoriesAny ideas?
-
I have blogged for 20 years and I note that my visitors do not use the categories and tags so my answer to any ideas is
no. -

Ah, well, I’ve blogged for a while too (started with MT, moved to B2 and wordpress so over ten years) and everyone has different needs, different visitors and different ideas about the way they want their site browsed.
I think it’s reasonable to request that there be shortcodes for many of the things that are covered in widgets that work in footers and sidebars. I prefer an archives page to a sidebar with a lot of distracting junk in it or a footer that one needs to scroll to every time one wants to search or mess with tags.

OMG! I have not blogged for 20 years. Make that 10 years. Sorry I mucked this thread up. I have bronchitis and my head is plugged up as well as my lungs.
Requesting additional shortcodes is cool and this is the forum to do that in.
-
Ya, I was going to call you on “20 years” but figured why start a war with someone trying to help.
Seems like it would not be too hard for WordPress engineers to come up with category and tag shortcodes. The search field request is probably a bit tougher in a static page, but then again, might be a nice challenge for one of the engineers.

No worries. I hope you feel better and thanks for considering this stuff.
I used a self-hosted install of wordpress for years so I’m relatively new to the hosted version so I’m not sure what’s available and what isn’t. Sounds like there’s a need for more shortcodes.
Again, feel better soon. Thanks.
-
I agree that more shortcodes are needed and will be needed in the future so I tagged this thread for Staff attention.

-
I hope to feel better sooner but the projection is 3 weeks so that’s what I have to accept begrudgingly. :)
-
Hi there,
Great idea! I made sure to pass this idea along to our developers so they can consider it as a future feature. :)
-
Thank you Rachelmcr, I appreciate it.
If, at some point, these shortcodes get released, what’t the best way for me to find out about it?
Thanks.
-
Hiya,
Most (I would say all, but things can always fall through the cracks) of our shortcodes get listed out right here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/shortcodes/
I would keep an eye on that for any new shortcodes in general. Unfortunately we don’t have any resource to which you can subscribe that lists all new updates or releases or I would direct you to that.

I use the Archives short code to list all the Posts on my site – will that work for you? There is some sorting and fine tuning of what is displayed, but I have never tried the various options
Goes on a page and the Page is linked from the menu
-
amightywp: Yes, I know that page but my question was, is there a way to get notified when that list gets added to? Going back to check that page from time to time seems like a rather “web 1.0” way to go. Thanks.
auxclass: Yes, I’m using the archives shortcode, but what I want is a shortcode that lists out the various archives (words) themselves, as well as the various tags (words).
For example:
photography
politics
art
movies
rants
etc.If such a shortcode exists, I have yet to find it. Thanks.
