More space on my sidebar

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
I am using the ‘Light’ Theme. I’d like to have more space between the different things on my sidebar. For eg. I have my Categories first, with the dropdown box option. The outline of the box sits snug under the heading. I’d prefer it to have a line of space beneath the heading. Then, the next heading sits flush under the Categories box…. and so on.

It all looks a bit squashed. Any suggestions?

    Many thanks!

I have viewed your blog in firfox 2.0.0.6 and note that the theme on your blog is seriously mis-aligned. Please send an email to staff and request assistance support [at] wordpress [dot] com

    Ditto with Netscape 7.2.

The issue though may be because the poster is incorrectly using the more tag within their posts. They are placing it in the middle of ol/li lists so the browser is thinking that those lists continue for the rest of the page. They do it in both the posts labeled “How and why I do what I do…” and the one right after it labeled ” trust me…” There’s no closing li or ol tags because the more tag is there.

edit: I’m not 100% sure as clicking through into one of the problem posts also shows the messed up sidebar as well as some errors. I know Mark has stated recently a couple of times now that we’re not supposed to be telling folks to send in an email outside of support hours unless a blog is broken but I would call this one so.

reedit: And this page is even worse.

Wow. This sounds kind of serious. I am viewing my blog on Firefox 2.0.0.6 and it looks… well, fine. I have viewed it on a couple of other machines and noticed the line under my header is sometimes broken…. but i figured that was because the way the other computers had their screens configured.

Dr Mike, I don’t really understand what you are describing. What are the ol/li lists? What am I doing to be “incorrectly using more tag within my posts’? I’m just going to ‘write post’, writing it, publishing it when I’m ready, ticking off the categories that are relevant, adding a new one if necessary. You know… usual stuff.

Anyway, thanks to you both for having a look. I’ll send an email to support.

    For example…

    This post

How and why I do what I do…

has the more tag inside the ordered list.

It’s a known issue of you have a more tag between two formatting tags like

    <i>blah blah blah
    <--more-->
    foo foo foo</i>

you’ll get the entire page of your blog rendered in italics.

Hope this is clear. My brain isn’t working quite right ATM.

Oh yeah, and everything is pushed over to the right in your blog using Firefox 2.0.0.5 on Fedora Core 7 (I guess they haven’t updated the repositories to use 2.0.0.6 yet).

Sorry – I’m still unclear! What is the ordered list? By ‘more tag’ I am thinking you mean when I split my post so that the reader clicks on the ‘read more’ link to see the whole post.
Is this because I have split the post at the end of a bullet-pointed line?

When I look at my blog on my computer here it isn’t all rendered in italics.

I’m not using code, I’m using the visual editor. And I’m not particularly technically savvy – sorry I don’t really understand what I’m doing wrong! (But I appreciate your efforts in trying to explain it to me – thanks.)

No problem. I know my post wasn’t coherent.

An ordered list is one that goes

    1. apples
    2. oranges
    3. bananas

An unordered list is one that uses bullet points

    *apples
    *oranges
    *bananas

And yes, it’s all to do because you’re splitting your posts with the read more link.

I just used the example of italics because it was the only one I could remember off the top of my head. I couldn’t remember what the html tags were for un/ordered lists.

    Sorry for the confusion.

Post back if this isn’t clear.

No, that’s great – thanks for coming back to me. I’ll go back to the blog and check where I have added all my ‘read more’ tags. Hopefully that might sort things out. Cheers.

Great. Glad to help. If you’re still having issues, post back. I’m going to bed soon, but there’s other people (who usually know a whole lot more than I do) who’ll be able to take an eyeball at it.
