More Tag Button does not work

  • Unknown's avatar

Title says it all. I tried adding that feature to my main blog posts but they don’t work. I check back at the post in the editor and the more tag thing vanished like I never clicked it in the first place.

I’m using the Elegent Grunge theme. Here’s the link to my blog if needed: http://gamingoblivion.wordpress.com/

This is really annoying, so thanks for the help in advance!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The instructions are found here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/
Are you convinced you followed them to the letter?
Please try editing and inserting “the more tag” again.

I did. I did it over ten times already. I started a new topic…did not work. I edited an old topic…did not work. What’s going on?

  • Unknown's avatar

I just did a test page to try it out again, and now it won’t show the text at all. It’s almost like it doesn’t think I typed anything. Like I published it without writing anything. >.<

What browser and version are you using? Lots of people are complaining of similar issues lately.

Try the Cookie Dance: log out, clear Browser cache and cookies, and do a full restart.

Are you looking to check for the more tag using the preview from the editor page? If so it will not show up there since that is actually the page you would get after clicking on the more tag. The more tag will only show up after the post is published and only show up on the main blog page.

I’m using Opera 11.50. I’ll try the cookie dance and post my findings.

If you have a different browser that you can try to help determine if it is just a problem with Opera or a problem related to other browsers also, that would be good.

And I’m actually checking the main page.

Are you sure that you’re not viewing the post “solo”? If you go to the post itself, you never see the results of using the “more” tag, since it would serve no purpose there. If you preview the post, you will likewise not see anything that indicates there’s a “more” tag anywhere. You have to actually post the post and then view it on the page with other posts.

Your most recent post is from May 14th — and it has no “more” tag — is that the post you’re referring to, or is it one you haven’t posted yet?

You should be able to edit your May 14 post on “Demon’s Souls Reviews” and insert the more tag anywhere you want the “continue reading”-type text to appear, then update the post, go back to your main blog page, and see only the first part of the post up to where the “more” tag was inserted.

That’s what I did. I am viewing it on my home page.

I added the more tag after the first pic and paragraph and didn’t work. I updated it and viewed it on the home page and did not work.

  • Unknown's avatar

So you added the more tag right after this paragraph?

It’s been a long time since my last review, but I’m still alive. I didn’t die horribly, at least not in real life, because in the game I’m about to review that’s exactly what happened to me.

When in the visual editor, does clicking the “more” tag button actually show you the horizontal line with “more” on the right-hand side of that line, and then that disappears when you update your post, or does clicking the more button do nothing at all?

  • Unknown's avatar

The former. It disappears once I update it.

  • Unknown's avatar

I just tried to use the more tag button with IE 8 and it did not work either.

  • Unknown's avatar

Hmmm, that is very odd! How about Firefox? It may not be the browser, but it’s worth trying Firefox, which generally works well with wordpress.com, just to rule out a browser issue that’s affecting both IE & Opera. You can download it at http://browsehappy.com

I think this is going to be something staff is going to have to look into. When you open the post you put the more tag in the editor after saving it, is the more tag still there in the post?

    One other thing to try.

Open the post in the editor, switch to the HTML tab, make a blank paragraph after the paragraph and then paste the following into the HTML editor and save.

    <!--more-->

Like I said, once I click update it vanishes. It is no longer there, like I never even used it.

And I already tried doing it the HTML way.

  • Unknown's avatar

And I’ll try firefox when I use my laptop. I’m using a 7 year old computer running XP. It’s extremely slow.

  • Unknown's avatar

Are you using the visual editor? Try using the HTML editor instead?

I just switched one of my test blogs to Elegant Grunge and inserted a more tag with no issues and it shows up just fine on the main blog page.

I’m also seeing a continue reading (more tag) in this post on your site right after the paragraph below the image, Demon’s Souls Review.
