More Tag Doesn't Work In All Contexts
-
I tried using the “more” tag in one of my posts and it works fine if you view it from the “home” page. However, if you search on a category or by month in the archive, when the list of posts is displayed there is no “continue reading” link. It looks as though the first few lines constitute the entire post. However, if you click on the title of the post, you do get all of the text. I checked the html code in the text editor, and the only thing embedded in the post is “<!–more–>” as far as I can tell.
A simple example from my blog, if you have a chance to look at it, is my second post (8/16), which is in the “language” category.

The more tag is designed to work on pages that normally display full posts. But some themes (including 2010) display excerpts on category pages. Auto excerpts on 2010 show the first 40 words of the post plus a “Continue reading” link. To produce the same result when you want a different number of words, you create your own custom excerpt in the Excerpt module of the post editor.
Note: if you don’t see the Excerpt module while editing a post, click Screen Options (top right) to enable it. -
