more tag not working

  • Unknown's avatar

    I am using Escutcheon theme.
If I use the more tag, the portion of the post below the tag is correctly displayed in the blog homepage, but the ‘more’ link to continue reading does not show up.
    Any hint?

    thanks

  • Hi @ddpersonalbudget, for themes that show excerpts, you’ll want to use an excerpt instead of a “more” tag.

Edit the post, then under the options on the left, you’ll find a box that says Excerpt. You can put a custom excerpt there (basically everything before your “more” tag or whatever you want) . Let us know if you need help with this!

    Hi @supernovia

    thanks for your reply.
The difference between Excerpt and using the “more” tag is that the latter inserts also a “read more” link at the end of the Excerpt paragraph, correct?
Is there any way to achieve this behavior also with the Excerpt?

    Thanks

  • It’s a bit tricky; in themes that automatically truncate posts (like this one) you should not use a read more tag.

You can leave the post whole and let it truncate itself, or you can use the excerpt for more control over the way the post displays in a list.

How can i add an except manually? Hint to what to write.

  • @temolad when editing the post, click on the Options widget on the left, then type out the excerpt there.

You could use any of these as the text there:

    – add the first few lines of the post

    – write a quick summary

    – write a question that will “hook” someone into the article

    – pull an intriguing quote from the article

It all depends on your goals and what you think is best.
