More than 1 Post Page on a blog?

I recently started this blog on WordPress. When I set it up, I envisioned having my “blog” on my home page along with several of the usual static pages like “about,” a list of books I’ve read this year, etc. I also really want to have a few more pages available like one specifically for “photo of the day or week.”

I am using the Twenty-Eleven theme since it seemed to offer the most customization in a format I want without having to buy a premium theme. However, I can’t seem to figure out how to set up the “photo of the day” page and have them also show up as a post format like the blog does. Currently I can only get the photos page to show up as a static page.

Am I missing something, or is this capability not available with this theme on the WordPress.com (free) site?

Thanks for any help you can give!

Yes, you are missing something about how to organize your blog.

Posts and pages are very different from each other. To organize your blog, you must clearly understand and use the differences between the two.

Pages are indeed static and meant for information that doesn’t change: about, or a glossary, or links with info about your blog’s topic.

Each blog has one dynamic blogging/home/front page where articles or posts you make are displayed in reverse chronological order.

When you write a post or article, you have the opportunity to assign it to a category.

Category pages have links like this:
    http://YOUR-BLOG-NAME.wordpress.com/category/CATEGORY-NAME/

You can use those category “pages” to make a custom menu for your readers to navigate through the various subjects on your site.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/

    And especially useful:

    Custom menus

Is the same also true if you buy a domain name? I also want to have two blogs on my site – one which refers to products that I have tested and my verdict on them and one which sets out articles re how to improve your sporting performance. Ideally I would like to set up one menu option i.e. Articles and Products and below that have two categories i.e. Products and Articles. Can I do this?

Yes, the same is true if you buy any upgrade. Each upgrade here applies only specifically to what it says. in the case of the domain upgrade, you get a new URL, that’s all.

It sounds like you need two separate blogs, or at least two separate categories with a lot of sub-categories.

It might be easier if I referred specifically to my site http://www.runningjude.com . You will see from the site, that on the top menu I have a heading ‘Articles and Products’. Both items are mixed together under this heading. On the right hand side bar, however, I have my categories i.e. Articles and Products as two separate categories so the viewer can just look at products or the articles. Ideally I would like to be able to have the top menu also making this same separation but haven’t a clue how to do it.

I only started my site on Sunday so am very new to all this. So if there is a way of separating out the two categories in the top menu I would be grateful of knowing what it is but it would need to be relatively easy for a novice like me to implement.

Yes, it would have been easier if you’d given us that link in the beginning. Because that is not a WordPress.COM blog at all; it is WordPress.ORG, and thus our answers will not apply to you. http://runningjude.wordpress.com/ is the WordPress.com blog we THOUGHT we were talking about here.

You need to be at WordPress.ORG forums for assistance.
