More than one site on a WordPress install…

I’m currently in the process of designing a hub / site for myself and my family. Now the domain will be oursurname.me and we will all have subdomains ie me.oursurname.me. There will be the main domain index where it will show the latest posts by each person. Also each person will have a completely separate design but I do want parts of each other sites to merge. So if there was a film review for example, it could be shown in all those that watched it, and different people can rate and add an opinion.
Basically what I’m getting at, would it be easier to maintain it all within one install or use wordpress mu and merge different parts?
Anyone that has done anything similar and would like to add hints and tips, I would be very grateful.
