The default and premium wordpress.com themes don’t really fit our brand. How can we get more options for the wordpress.com hosted solution?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
You cannot use any third party themes on any blog hosted by WordPress.COM. You are confusing WordPress.COM hosted blogs with WordPress.ORG installs. There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs for security reasons and we cannot upload any third party themes. There is no upgrade you can purchase here that changes that reality.
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
The only themes we can use on WordPress.com hosted blogs are licensed and adapted to run on our multiuser software the themes are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and in your dashboard at > Appearance > Themes
There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs for security reasons and we cannot:
upload any third party themes,
create child themes,
create our own themes,
edit templates,
create own own layouts,
or use stylesheets from other themes.Relevant support docs:

http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/WordPress.org offers free software that you can install on a web server. You can create themes, upload and install themes and plugins, run ads, and edit the database, etc. If you want FTP access and to install plugins or third party themes into a site then you will have to hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/ and set up your own WordPress.org install.
If you want to get a WordPress.ORG install and you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive the advice of WordPress.ORG bloggers. For hiring a web host see https://wordpress.org/hosting and then you can set up your own wordpress.org install.

Yes, I know that you cannot install your own templates — I wanted to know if there was a process of requesting additional templates – they mention it in the FAQ that you can request other templates, but then they don’t provide any way to actually do it.

from their support page:
We are always looking to add new themes to WordPress.com. Please feel free to suggest the addition of any theme. You can either contact support with the suggestion or drop a line in the Themes Forum.
But then they don’t actually provide a way to contact – they just funnel you into the knowledgebase and community.

This is a multiuser blogging platform. All blogs here wearing the same theme are using the same underlying templates as seen on the live demo sites for each theme. You can request themes as stated here 2. Post a suggestion for a new theme
