most recent tags not in tag cloud

  None of the tags on my most recent post appeared in the tag cloud. I don’t think this has ever happened before. Can someone help??

  The Tag cloud widget display 45 of your most used tags so if your latest tags are not among those I suggest waiting because the data is cached and may take some time to catch up and display. http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/tag-cloud-widget/

  Are they tags you haven’t used before? Once you get beyond a certain number of tags (45, I believe), only the most used tags appear in the tag cloud. So if these are new tags, once you’ve used them more than some other tags, those other tags fall off the cloud and the newer ones will appear. (It looked as though there were 45 tags in your cloud, though I didn’t count them.)

  Ah, the magic number is 45. That explains it. Thank you both so very much.

  I did indeed reach 45, and so I presume no new tags will be added unless they are used more often than the current 45?

  Good to know this and to be more careful in choosing which tags to use.

  I am not 100% sure, but I believe the first 45 are shown no matter what. Even if you stop using them and use 45 new ones repeatedly.

  My understanding of the tag cloud widget is that it displays the “most popular” topics that you write about most frequently (that’s the way I read the tag cloud info in the document that timethief cites), and I have more than 45 tags, and I’ve seen new recent ones push old ones off. (I’m trying to pare down the number of tags I have, so I’ve been paying some attention to them on my blog, so I noticed that.)

  I wish I’d been more judicious and more focussed on how I created tags back when I began blogging — you have a good opportunity here to be more aware than I was! (It was rather haphazard the way I started!)

  I’m glad I could point to the correct information. The most popular 45 tags are the ones that are displayed by the widget and over time they may or may not change depending how many posts you use any given tag on. You’re welcome. Best wishes to you. :)
