I’ve just started a wordpress blog with the motif theme and wish to place a large image under the header just like the demo version (pic of two guys at a desk).
The header image upload allows me to place an image at the top of page but how do I add an image to the area in question. I can’t even find a reference to what area of the site that is called
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

In order to have a large image on the top of the page like you see in the demo and in the featured blogs shown, you have to create a page and set a feature image.
I followed the instructions found on the theme page itself http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/motif/ – but I will also include them here. These are the steps to create a front page.
1. From your dashboard, go to Pages and create a new page or edit an existing page. Then, in the Page Attributes module, assign the front page template to the page.
2. Go to Settings → Reading and set “Front page displays” to “A static page.”
3. In the dropdown menus, select the page you just assigned the front page template to in Step 1 as “Front page.” Choose any of your other pages as “Posts page:” this is where your blog posts will be displayed. After you have created the new front page, you can set the featured image. First you must go to the new page you have created. It will look like a regular blog post page. In the body you can type a brief summary of your website. On the right hand side (it will be on the bottom of the right hand column) there will be a place to set your featured image. You can upload your media here. And once it is set, it should appear below your navigation bar with the text that you have written floating over it.
