motif theme gallery widget size

I’d like to use a slideshow through the gallery widget using the motif theme. However, the theme does not appear to respect the gallery option for image size and instead gives a slideshow of rather small images within a 625×135 box regardless of the image size selected. The responsive feature also does not appear to scale well down to tablet or mobile size, and the images display wide outside of the widget box. Do you have any suggestions for working around this? Is it necessary to get the premium upgrade in order to access the css directly?

We can’t really give an accurate response without a link to the site you need help with.
Generally speaking, if you are indeed speaking about a site hosted on WordPress.com, the size of the images in the Gallery widget I believe are determined by the width of the theme’s sidebar/widget area and, yes, you would need to upgrade to Premium or the Custom Design upgrade in order to change that through CSS.

As I said, the size of the images are determined by the size of the sidebar/widget area. Maybe try a text widget with the Gallery shortcode instead? Something like:
[gallery type="slideshow" include="xxxx,xxxx,xxxx" size="medium"]Where xxxx is the image ID of your images.
