Move columns right on Beuno Theme

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hey everyone, I’m fidgeting with the CSS to try to get the main column and right column to float right. My objective is to have the move all the free space on the left and right of the blog to the left side of the blog. I have tried having the full and right columns float right but then I keep getting this strange black and pink banner at the top of my page that I cannot get rid of. My website is http://www.laurenhefez.com and I am using the Beuno theme. I have the CSS upgrade but I’m still fairly novice with CSS code so I understand the basics but i find that the CSS for this theme is complex enough that tweaking one thing seems to impact many things. I appreciate any help anyone can provide.

    Thanks!

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Many people have CSS edited Bueno. Maybe if you search through forum threads you will find the question has been asked and answered. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/tags/bueno

    There is no official Staff support for the CSS upgrade, and precious little Volunteer support, so please be patient while waiting for help.

    Thanks timethief, I looked there but there I have not had much luck. Also the Beuno specific tag is pretty sparse. I know there is no official support for the CSS upgrade but from searching the forums I have seen some volunteers who have been very generous so I’m hoping to be lucky enough to get some help. I think I’m on the right track by using float: right with the full and right columns but doing so has some side effects that I have not been able to fix.

    One of the two Volunteers who help with CSS is very busy right now and is not likely to be seen much here in the upcoming week. Hopefully, the other Volunteer will log-in and help you in the next couple of days.

    …but i find that the CSS for this theme is complex enough that tweaking one thing seems to impact many things.

    That usually happens when you try to make significant changes to any theme your blog may have.

    Now, I checked your blog and apparently you’ve already removed the black and pink banners you speak of…

    Also, since you’re new to CSS, you might want to read this. It might help you to understand better how CSS works:

    @Juan: She hasn’t removed the black and pink, she just hasn’t applied the change she wants (because if she did she would get the black and pink).

    @lhefez: The black and pink is your footer. So to move the whole content to the right I think you need this (and Juan please correct me if I’m missing something):

    .col-full {float: right;}

    #footer, #extended-footer {clear: both;}

    Gee… I guess my brain doesn’t function properly on the weekends…

    Yes, Panos, your solution is correct.

    Thanks!

    Now I wonder why lhefez wants this change…

  • Unknown's avatar

    @lhefez: I can see you made that change. But as I said above, I wonder why: do you realize that how much of your background photo a visitor will see depends on the visitor’s monitor size and screen resolution?

    1. Go to settings > reading and set your site to show at most 5 posts per page. It takes for ever for your site to load on my wireless internet connection and the search engines will penalize you for a slow loading site.

    2. This is what someone with a 1024 x 768 monitor resolution will see on your site: http://flippintestblog.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/hefez.jpg .

    You always have to keep in mind what people are using for monitor resolutions, and with over 23% of people worldwide still on 1024 x 768 resolution, you have to keep them in mind.

    Monitor resolutions (May/2011 StatCounter Global Stats)

    1 — 1024×768 — 23.31%
    2 — 1280×800 — 15.11%
    3 — 1366×768 — 14.81%
    4 — 1280×1024 — 8.19%
    5 — 1440×900 — 7.07%
    6 — 1680×1050 — 3.84%

    @Rich: thanks for explaining (and illustrating) this so clearly!

    @Panos, you are welcome. Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words, yes?
