Move comments
-
Many users comment on wrong pages i.e the content of their comment on a post page might actually be something which will be more relevant if it were on the about page. Those comment are valuable but it will be irrelevant to the content.
So is there a way to transfer user comments from one post or page to another?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
Not so much.
The only real way to do this I believe would be to open your site in a different browser (without logging in) and copy and post the information from your Comments Dashboard to the comment window in the other browser.
But might be confusing to your visitors when they come back expecting to find their comment and not finding it where they left it.
-
Not only confusing, but it will be shown as if I am the one making those comments and I am replying to them myself. I mean I will look like a teenage girl hungry for attention.
I don’t mind doing it the copy paste way, but how do I do it whilst retaining the user names?
-
You can’t. You can only copy and paste including the usernames, but they’ll show up as text, and it will be obvious the user didn’t make that comment in the place you put it.

The whole point of using a second browser (not browser window, sorry if that wasn’t clear) is so that you are not logged in to WPcom when you copy/paste the information from your comment dashboard (from your logged in browser) into the comment box (logged out browser).
I think I just managed to confuse myself. ;-)
-
Ah, that’s true but that won’t work if they have commented using a WordPress.com ID, because you’ll be prompted to log in to that WP.com account, which you cannot do.
-
Of course!
(I blame the antihistamines for my obvious forgetfulness about that point entirely. Thanks for the catch!)
-
Thanks for all the ideas guys. :) Really appreciate it. But the important aspect which I need here it to transfer the contents along with the id’s through which they have been commented. I guess that ain’t possible.
Once again, thanks. :)

I moved a comment once, didn’t really think anything of it at the time. A reader had asked a question in a particular tutorial post that actually pertained to a different tutorial.
I wanted to answer it in the appropriate post in case anyone else had the same question, so I just answered him briefly and maybe with a little apology? that I was moving his question over to the other post and would answer it there, and then I pasted his question in (prefacing it with a brief explanation) and answered it.
I can’t remember now which post it was, but I doubt that his user id was copied over, I think I just copied and inserted the comment and prefaced it something like : Got this question in another post from so-and-so, moving it here in case it might be helpful to anyone else with the same question. Then answered it.
Then he responded there to my answer so his user id would have shown up then. He didn’t seem offended at my moving his question…
But are you are talking about moving a comment a long time after it was made? That seems really different… especially if you’re moving a bunch of nested comments under his as well. If someone had subscribed to the comments in that post, they would be left hanging, for one thing.

You can move (or copy) comments easily, from one post to another with a plugin like https://wordpress.org/plugins/copy-or-move-comments
Works well!

Yes all the regular Volunteers answering questions here are aware of plugins as we also have WordPress.ORG installs. But posting that here will only cause confusion because there is no FTP access and no blogger installed plugin capability on any free hosted WordPress.COM blogs and there is no upgrade you can purchase here that changes that reality.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/If you want FTP access and to install plugins or third party themes into a site then you will have to hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/ and set up your own WordPress.org install. WordPress.org offers free software that you can install on a web server. You can upload and install themes and plugins, run ads, conduct ecommerce and edit the database. Learn about the differences here. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

P.S. If you want to answer WordPress.ORG support questions please go to http://wordpress.ORG/support but please do not continue to post what only applies to WordPress.ORG software installs into support forum threads here at WordPress.COM.
