Hi katemetzner, your new hosting provider would send a transfer ticket to the currant host. You would need complete backups of your site before accepting the ticket.

Please note: this forum is for WordPress.com sites and not for Self-hosted sites as you have.
For more information on the differences you can read more here. https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
The best place to get helped to solve your problem is working with your hosting provider. If you would like to get support for self-hosted websites here is the link for the “WordPress.org” forum.

    Hope this was helpful. ☺

  • Hi there,

Your domain, katemetzner.com, is currently registered with Bluehost. You’ll need to contact them to find out their process for unlocking a domain for transfer, and the new provider you want to use for their process of initiating a transfer it.

That is not how domain transfers work. To transfer a domain the domain owner needs to unlock the domain and get a transfer code for the domain, which they then submit at the new domain provider. The new provider will use that code to initiate a transfer at the registry that controls the domain. There is no direct communication between the actual domain providers at all.

You can see WordPress.com’s process as an example here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/

The process may differ for some ccTLDs, but all domain extensions that fall under ICANN registration must follow the process I outlined here.

In this case pointing the OP to the self-hosted forums is not appropriate, as this is not a software issue and they won’t be able to help either. The OP needs to contact their host/domain provider for help with domain issues.
