Move from wordpress.com to wordpress.org

    G’day.
We’ve decided to move from our wordpress.com blog to a wordpress.org self-hosted site. How do we get a wordpress.org domain? We have a custom domain that will need to be mapped to the wordpress.org domain.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi,

WordPress.org isn’t a hosting service, like WordPress.com is. WordPress.org is where the software is that you can use on your server (which is the same software WordPress.com is built upon).

To use WordPress.org software, you can use virtually any webhost. We have a few options listed at http://get.wp.com/hosting/

After signing up with one of those services, they all have a one-step install process to add WordPress software. Each service has different procedures for adding domain names, which they can help you with.

We have a bit more about the difference between the two at WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

    Cheers!

    G’day.

Thanks for your answer. I must say that we already know what you’ve told us and have already looked carefully at the support link in your last paragraph.

The second sentence in our query was asking the the question, “Do we need to get a new WordPress domain name of the form “cjppaustralia.wordpress.org” (as opposed to our current one of cjppaustralia.wordpress.com) in order to run a self-hosted blog with WordPress software?” You imply that the answer is “No”. That is the question we needed answered.

It’d be very useful if this fact could be spelled out in your support pages relating to self-hosted blogs as users like us are not to know the detailed whys and wherefores of how WordPress wants to monitor/control/licence the use of its software by issuing domain names.

    Regards,
    Peter

  • Hi Peter,

That’s correct. With WordPress.com, since we host your site, everyone has a *.wordpress.com address.

With WordPress.org, no registration or notification is required to use the software, nor are there any restrictions to the type of sites you can host with the WordPress software. The only license associated with the software is known as the GPL. A bit about it and the philosophy about it can be seen at http://wordpress.org/about/philosophy/#gpl

There is no requirement to have a *.wordpress.org domain (in fact, that’s not possible).

I’ve modified the page at http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ to specify that no registration with WordPress.org is required.

If there’s anything else we can do for you, please let me know. Thanks!

    G’day.

    Thanks for your quick reply.

Modifying the support page, as you’ve done, will be very helpful to others in our position, I’m sure!

    Regards,
    Peter
