Move from WP.com to WP.org – images point to previous WP.com database
-
Hi there,
on 27th January 2014 I initiated a move of my WP.com blog (Title: Forelle & Äsche) to a self hosted WP.org blog (Title: Fliegenfischen & Fliegenbinden). On that same day I also moved the domain – http://www.forelleundaesche.com – which I had registered with WP.com for more than a year.
I regret to say that the move did not execute as hassle free as I hoped. It’s a shame I cannot attach screen shots. I try to describe what I believe did not work as expected.
1. I do find it strange that my newly created blog – self hosted, WP.org – appears in the WP.com dashboard for my previous blog. OLD BLOG – WP.com Forelle & Äsche, user name: Tankred / NEW BLOG – WP.org Fliegenfischen & Fliegenbinden user name: Tankred Rinder
2. I find it odd, that I receive messages from WP.com that someone has liked a post – as happened on 3rd Feb. by WP a user. By rights WP.com should not know what’s happening on a WP.org blog, ist that correct?
3. I find it strange I get a message by WP.com: Your stats are booming on 3rd Feb. Same issue as above. By rights WP.com should not know what’s happening on a WP.org blog, ist that correct?
4. I do also not quite comprehend why I do get a notification about someone leaving a comment on a post on 31st January. Once again teh comment Shows on my WP.com Dashboard which it should not, correct?
All this indicates that my new site/blog points to my previous WP.com database
From my understanding the new site/blog should not be visible on my WP.com Dashboard since I created the blog at WP.org Please clarify if I got this concept wrong.
Things to get really tricky when it comes to my database of images.
1. After the import of the xml file to my WP.org I noticed that around half of 1.500 images showed as unattached in the new media library. Strangely enough they are visible to visitors to my page – not so strange when you consider that the images do point to my previous and identical WP.com site/blog
2. Hence I tried reimporting the afflicted images by uploading them from local folders into the media library.
3. After the import the media library displays the image as imported on 31st January 2014, attached to the corresponding article. However the image URL points to the WP.com database since the URL reads…. http://www.forelleundaesche.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/imagename You notice the upload date?
4. The images could still be seen online though – albeit not from a MAC, iPhone or iPad. If a visitor to my page clicks on the image from an iOS device they receive a 404 errror message
I am aware there are several issue at hand here.
a. An WP.org blog having been created and showing in the Dashboard for a WP.com blog during the Transfer process
b. Images at the WP.org blog pointing to Images at the WP.com blog
c. Visibility of images to iOS users
Could you please look at the issue at hand and tackle my issues in the order of priority above? I am quite distressed by the whole process and I feel I am being let down by a technical glitch.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Best regards – Tankred
The blog I need help with is forelleundaesche.wordpress.com (previous WP.com blog) and http://www.forelleundaesche.com (new WP.org blog)
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Tankred,
The reason you’re seeing these notifications is that you have connected the Jetpack plugin on your new self-hosted site:
http://jetpack.me/This connects your self-hosted site to your WordPress.com account, so that you can use some of our features, such as stats, comments, subscriptions, etc. The link to your new site that you see in your old WordPress.com account is just the Jetpack connection.
In addition, your old blog does still exist at its original URL:
http://forelleundaesche.wordpress.com/Moving your content and domain does not automatically delete the old site from here. You will probably want to delete it now, or set it to private:
Delete Site
Privacy SettingsFor your image filepaths, “/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/imagename” is a WordPress.org filepath, not a WordPress.com one. Do any of your image permalinks still look like this on your new site:
forelleundaesche.files.wordpress.com/date/imagename
To reattach the unattached media files, you’ll either need to do it manually, or there might be a plugin that will do it. You can ask for advice on that in the WordPress.org support forums here:
http://wordpress.org/support/Does this clear things up a bit? Let me know if you have further questions!
-
Hi ya and thanks for getting back to me,
it clears things up a little but not totally.
Could you please confirm that what visitors currently see, is actually my previous blog and not my new one? Apart form the new theme obviously.
Why is my new blog registered in the dashboard of WP.com?
Regarding your question about the image file URL:
I did a ”files.” search in the media library and 31 images still follow the WP.com media file URL format. I suppose that’s manageable.Deleting the previous blog sounds very dramatic, but if that’s what I have to do I will.
Please outline to me in clear, easy to follow and sequential steps, what I have to do to clear up the current mess.
After that I do have some minor other issues, which I’d like to tackle once the transfer has been completed satisfactory.
i.e. my Email and WP followers don’t show in WP.org
PS: It’s probably wise to export my database again, isn’t it?
Thanks for your support, looking forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes

Hi Tankred,
Your visitors to http://www.forelleundaesche.com/ see your new site. If anyone goes to http://forelleundaesche.wordpress.com/ , they of course see your old one.
Your new site shows up in your WordPress.com My Blogs list because of the Jetpack connection. Jetpack connects to a WordPress.com account, and so Jetpack connections to self-hosted sites appear listed in the WordPress.com user accounts they are connected to.
If you don’t want to delete your old blog, just set it to private:
Privacy SettingsIn fact, that’s smarter, because then it’s there if you ever want to look at it again for any reason.
Because you have the Jetpack plugin, I can migrate all of your followers to the new site for you. I’ve just gone ahead and taken care of that.
-
Hi Eurello,
thanks for the explanation and for transferring my followers.
With regard to JetPack – in the current view I cannot see from which country my visitors come from. Is this feature not available for JetPack WP.org or is there a glitch?
I am aware that my problems with the images is beyond your possibilities of assistance. It stresses me though. For one post I deleted all images attached to the post. I reimported and inserted the images. They simply aren’t visible on the iPad or iPhone. Headache!
Thanks for your support
Best wishes, Tankred

Country stats don’t yet display on the self-hosted end. You can still see them if you log into your old WordPress.com account and go here:
http://wordpress.com/my-stats/Select your Jetpack blog from the dropdown at the top.
Can you link me to the specific post or page where those images are so I can take a look?
-
Hi Eurello,
thanks for your help. I will be away the next three days. Mid next week I will have a list of URL on which the images do’nt show.
Many thanks for the assistance, very much appreciated
Best wishes

Hi eurello,
back from my short trip to the issue with my blog. Well the few days gave me some strength after the stressing weeks. Here’s the low down of my findings with regard to the images that don’t show anymore on my blog.
1. When I transferred from WP.com to WP.org I noticed around 800 of the 1500 images showed in the new WP.org database as unattached.
2. I started reimporting a big chunk of the unattached images. Before importing I renamed the majority of them for SEO reasons. After the reimport I put them in the posts, thinking they would be attached from now on. Which they are according to my WP.org media library. Shame they won’t show in the posts.
3. After that I received messages from readers, that they can’t see my images. Please have a look at the comment section at the most recent blog entry. Mind you, the comments are in German.
4. Sad thing is, that from the computer I work with – MAC 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5, OSX 10.8.5 – my blog/ site looks fine apart from the size of images in the image slider. I was intending to import these images in the appropriate size to display properly. Not such a good idea at the moment.
5. Below is a list of posts which are affected by showing no images at all or only displaying the full number of images partially.
Thank you again for looking into this.

Hi Tankred,
The only broken image I found is this one:
http://www.forelleundaesche.com/2013/02/03/lebendige-bache-und-flusse/The image is:
http://www.forelleundaesche.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Ludwig_Tent_Lebendige_Ba%CC%88che_und_Flu%CC%88sse.jpgThe filepath is correct, but the image is broken, which means it’s not there. This sort of thing can happen if you insert an image into your post, and then later delete it from your actual Media Library. It’s possible this also happened because you renamed the image file names. Did you reinsert them into the posts they are in after you renamed them? Otherwise, they won’t work.
As far as display issues only (images don’t show in some browsers, images don’t show on a mobile device), we are support only for blogs hosted here on WordPress.com and for the Jetpack plugin specifically. For other issues with your site, you can get support in the WordPress.org forums here:
http://wordpress.org/support/And for some issues, you might also need to contact your web host.
I hope this helps!!
-
Hi eurello,
thanks for all your effort. Shame you can’t accompany me in this process any longer. I felt in good hands with you.
Well, I renamed the images before reimporting them. I am now going to do a few things.
1. I ask WP.org support to look at the issue.
2. I will delete the ‘unattached’ images from the media library. Maybe there is a conflict with them still occupying space and properties in the library.
3. If that fails as well I will wipe the server of my blog and database and start with a clean slate and reinstall everything – WP 3.8.1 and my blog – one more time.
Thanks for the assistance. Take care!
Tankred

Hi Tankred,
No need to delete the unattached images — they aren’t causing any problems.
And I really wouldn’t recommend starting over. Any of the problems I mentioned you might be having with your images would happen again.
If I were you, I’d just fix the missing or broken images as you come across them, really. The vast majority of your content and images appear to be intact for me, and I’m sure your readers would care less about a broken image here or there in the archives than they would about the site being down while you start over. :)
