Move initial post to a Page called Blog (But I figured it out!)

    Hi all,
I’m a newbie to WP, but been online a few decades. ;)

So I FINALLY figured out that in order to do ANY customizations of appearance, you had to create a post FIRST (completely contrary to every other site I’ve dealt with). So I created a post consisting of a short bit of freeverse intended for my blog.

I’ve been watching a few YouTube vids to get me started, and I viewed this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFo9GMfmezQ which was very helpful for what I needed, but it seems to be a little out of date, as the screen shots look different (and a little older). When I got up to about 20 minutes or so into that vid, this guy, I think his name’s Amir, changes his first/front/main/home page to a static page. then changes a setting that puts his Post Page to “Blog”, and then his Posts show up under Blog on his menu.

Firstly, I’m assuming that they would have ADDED functionality, rather than taking it away, so there MUST be a way to do the same thing, but you have to go another route to get there.

So I’m trying to follow along as best as I can, but I cannot for the life of me FIND a place to do this.

What I want to do is fix it so that my first Post, “Silk Sheets,” shows up on the Blog Page rather than on the MAIN page.

Aaaaand . . . in following what I was doing slowly in order to write this post out, I have figured it out. Here’s where I stumbled:

On the Dashboard, under Customize, Static Front Page, I didn’t see the options for where new Posts should go UNTIL I CLICKED ON THAT OPTION. Kinda wish that all options were visible, but there you go.

Hopefully this will help someone else who’s running into this and just not finding it.

I’m sure I’ll be back! (Because I do not grok the whole Theme thing, but maybe I’ll figure THAT out as well!)

  • Hi there.

Firstly, I’m assuming that they would have ADDED functionality, rather than taking it away, so there MUST be a way to do the same thing, but you have to go another route to get there.

I think all the tutorial videos are based on the WP-Admin dashboard. If you’re looking at the My Sites page (blue toolbar at the top) then you won’t find all the features mentioned in the video. You can use this link to get to your WP-Admin dashboard, which I suspect will be what you’re looking for: http://darcydelmar.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

What I want to do is fix it so that my first Post, “Silk Sheets,” shows up on the Blog Page rather than on the MAIN page.

The instructions for that is here, for next time ;-) https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

And looking at your About page and categories: if you’re going to be publishing erotica, please make sure that you report your own page as mature content. See here for more info: https://en.support.wordpress.com/mature-content/

    Hi kekkieh,

    Thanks for the info!

But I’m having trouble following the instructions to report my content. Do you know of any video I can look at or maybe some instructions with photos so I can follow along. I have never had so much trouble finding things that the instructions are talking about! I don’t want to run afoul of the rules, but I cannot for the life of me figure them out. I’ve tried in two different browsers so far, and I cannot find the thing they’re talking about in this link!

    Help?

    Much appreciated,

    Darcy

  • Oops. My mistake. That link doesn’t include the instructions for actually reporting the site.

While viewing your site, hover the mouse over My Sites in the toolbar. A drop-down menu will appear. Click on Report this content at the bottom. http://snag.gy/x9dl8.jpg

In the pop-up that generates, select the option for Mature Content, and in the next window, just explain you’re reporting your own site due to its subject matter. Here is the other support doc: https://en.support.wordpress.com/report-blogs/

    Thanks, Kokkieh!

I FINALLY figured it out, thanks to your screenshot! (Seriously, I kept looking and looking, from different places, until I realized that I needed to lengthen my page so I could see the very last item on the menu!)

If I were more adept with this whole system (which, like I said, works completely the opposite of everything I’ve ever used), I’d find a way to put that particular info in its own little sticky note or checklist for things newbies to WP need to do, especially those who write erotica and such.

Again, thanks sooooo much for your help!!!

    Darcy

  • Sorry you struggled so much with this, but I’m glad you figured it out.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask :)
