Move my domain to WordPress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi! My name is Larissa and I’m from the Netherlands (so not that good English, I’m sorry). I couldn’t find the answer on my question anywhere, so I hope any of you can help me with it.

I got a domain name (www.adventuresbylarissa.nl) from the hosting STRATO.nl. If you click on my site, you will see that. Now I have to move my domain from STRATO to WordPress.com (I got a move code), so I did that (I thought). Now I got my domain name on WordPress.com but also on STRATO. What?! STRATO can’t help me now and I don’t know what to do anymore. They say I have to fill in the move code I got from them, but I can’t fill that code in anywhere.. I don’t know anymore.

I hope anyone could help my, but maybe my description isn’t explained well. If you don’t understand my description, let me know so I can change it if that’s possible! Oh, and sorry for the misspellings..

    Greets, Larissa de Vos.

Currently we do not allow incoming transfers to allow you to move the domain to WordPress.com. However, you are more than welcome to use the domain you bought from STRATO.nl with us.

You have already completed the first step, adding domain mapping on our end. The next step will be to change the name servers. this is done over at STRATO.nl. You’ll find more information in step 2 of our guide:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/#2-update-your-dns

Once the domain’s name servers are changed you’ll see your WordPress.com site at your domain within 72 hours (normally within 4 hours or so though)

If you have any other questions let us know.

Thank you! I’ll do my best to translate your description and start with it. (:

Hi! I worked with it and I find where step 2 of your guide is. In that step they tell me:

”replace any existing name servers with these three domain name server (DNS) addresses:

    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM”

But, where do I have to fill in these three ‘codes’ and do I have to fill them all in, or one of them?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, is there anyone who can help my out?

I tried something with the guide ‘bdukes’ gave me before. I filled ‘NS1.WORDPRESS.COM’ in instead of my domain name. If you check my blog/site now, you will find the ‘404 ERROR’. What to do now? Can anyone please help me out? (:

  • Hi, Larissa!

    1. First, you have to purchase the $13 domain mapping upgrade here at WordPress.com. To do that, go to Domains page, select your blog and then the “Map an existing domain” option. Next, enter your domain there.

    2. Then, contact Strato and ask them to change your domain’s name servers to the following:

    ns1.wordpress.com
    ns2.wordpress.com
    ns3.wordpress.com

You seem to have changed the site address in WordPress’s settings, that’s why it is no more accessible. The name servers above are not entered here, rather in the DNS editor of Strato. (ask them to do it for you.)

Hi! So much thanks for your answer! Do you mean I first have to buy my domain? I don’t understand that, but I saw the $13 before at the domain paying. If you mean that: I payed that a few days ago.

If I understand the rest: I have to ask Strato to fill in the three ‘ns’ codes? And do I have to say where they have to fill them in or do they know that? Because I have no idea where I have to fill that in, haha.

Last, I filled the code wrong in I guess, so I’m going to change it the way before. Hope the error is gone then.

    Sorry for the bad English!

  • Your English is absolutely fine! :)

Do you mean I first have to buy my domain? I don’t understand that, but I saw the $13 before at the domain paying. If you mean that: I payed that a few days ago.

Not buy the domain, rather it is just a fee for adding a domain which you already own, to a WordPress.com blog. If you’ve paid it already, great.

If I understand the rest: I have to ask Strato to fill in the three ‘ns’ codes? And do I have to say where they have to fill them in or do they know that? Because I have no idea where I have to fill that in, haha.

Nope, just ask them to change the NS records and they’ll do it for you. :)

Ah okay! I’m going to contact them right now, and ask them to change the NS records of my domain there, right? Hope they can help me so I can use my blog with the domainname before August. (:

Looks like you’re on the right track now, if you need anything else let us know.

Hi! I asked Strato to change my NS records, but they told me I do not have my domain registered at Strato. I got a movecode to move my domain to WordPress.com, and after that they say they couldn’t help me anymore because they’re not behind WordPress.com and they don’t know how to fix the rest. Anyway, I’m going to understand it a little I guess: I buyed my domain at WordPress.com and from I got a move code from Strato, to move the domain to WordPress.com. Okay, clear. But.. Where do I have to fill in the movecode? It would be logical if I had to fill that in when I buyed my domain at WordPress.com, but I didn’t saw anywhere I could fill that in.

Can you help me and tell me where I have to fill in the move code? I guess, if I filled that in, he must be doing it. (:

Oh, and they told me if I do not be fast with moving my domain name, my domain will be in quarantine (if that is the good word in English) for 60 days, and that’s so long! Haha, anyway, hope you can help me with this. (:

Wait, I meant: ”I asked Strato to change my NS records, but they told me I do not have my domain registered at Strato anymore” Sorry for the incorrect sentence.

  • Anyway, I’m going to understand it a little I guess: I buyed my domain at WordPress.com

Larissa, I don’t think you bought the domain from WordPress.com, as .nl extension is not supported for registration. it could have been Strato OR Cronon.

I asked Strato to change my NS records, but they told me I do not have my domain registered at Strato. I got a movecode to move my domain to WordPress.com

You didn’t need any code in the first place, as domain names cannot be transferred to WordPress.com. They can only be mapped by changing NS records (name servers).

Getting only the auth code from your registrar does not initiate the transfer, so I’m not sure why Strato is telling you they don’t have control over your domain to change NS records.

Now, please try to contact the website from where you purchased the domain, and ask them to only change the NS records. It could be Cronon or Strato.

  • According to whois data, the registrar is Cronon.
