Move uploads from a Self-Hosted WordPress to WordPress.com?
-
I am moving a blog from self-hosted to wordpress.com. I have all of the uploads, and all of the posts in WXR files. How can I import all the old uploads (which are stored in Year/Month folders) into the wordpress.com blog?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi @donzacharias, when you run the importer with the WXR files, we automatically get the media attachments for you as well.
I do recommend double checking the media library though, after import, to ensure all of the files came through. If not, we can try again from our end to get past any host timeouts.
Also, it’s easiest if you clear out any spam comments prior to exporting on the old site.

Thanks! What are the requirements for getting the media attachments? Do they have to come from an existing WordPress site?
My latest attempt (since I thought it would work as you described) was to create a static site, upload my whole uploads folder there, and then edit all references to images in the WXR files to point to the new static domain. Imported some posts, and the references to the new domain stuck–nothing went into the media library.

It’s best if the site mentioned in the export file still exists, or at least for the images to still be in those locations.
If you are comfortable editing the wxr, please be sure to swap out any mentions of the old domain in addition to swapping out image references. If the images appear to be coming from some third-party source (and they would if you’re doing what you described) we don’t try to import them.
Also, I recommend importing into an empty site on our servers, so you can re-empty it and re-import if needed.
If you need more help, let us know; we’ll have you send a clean, unmodified export file plus links to the new file locations & we’ll see if we can sort it out here.
