Hi there, please follow the instructions on this guide and let us know if you have any further questions or issues whilst doing so: https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/view-all/

  • Hi there,

The only way to move a site to WordPress.com is by importing a .xml export file. To get that file, you need to log into the old site’s WP-Admin dashboard and download it from Tools ->Export. It’s not possible to import your site’s source code or database files.

It’s not possible to even import the site without paying money, I can’t even have my domain pointed to without paying money! wordpress. Com wants money to point the my domain and they want money for the website. They say $13 for the domain manager then it goes directly to wanting me to pay for the site.

Hi, this is just a suggestion, but what you could do would be to import your content to the free site here, and then in your domain settings at your registrar, set your custom domain to redirect to your site url here. Doing it that way would mean that you would not have to pay for an upgrade right now and all your visitors would get to your site automatically so you would not miss any traffic.

where?? can you send links? i cant even get past the first page without having to pay money. no chance to upload anything. I need step by step with explanation, and links.

  • @sydneyagriffin Scroll past the plans and you’ll see a free site link. That will give you a site with a *.wordpress.com address, and you can import there using these steps:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/coming-from-self-hosted/

If you want your custom domain to work properly, though, in hopes of preserving any SEO links you’ve had, you will want a plan here and you’ll want to map the domain (or transfer it in.)

If it’s good enough to have the domain just redirect here, you can do that too; just note you’ll need to pay to renew your domain at some point as well, and you might as well do that through a plan instead if you can.

@sydneyagriffin, I’ve closed the other thread you stared on this and copied my reply from that thread below.

    Reply from other thread:
That looks like it may be a complete site backup of all the files in your account at Inmotion.

What we would need to import here would be an export file that is generated from within the WordPress dashboard of that site under Tools > Export. That file can be imported here.

Check with Inmotion and see what sort of file they have given you. Is the site that the backup was done off of still live and working?

yes but the site is off-line, thats the file in motion will use to put it back up. so i guess i will put it up temporarily just to get that .XML file, then take it back down, so we can do our editing, changing the business name sucks, all our content has to be updated. the in-motion account only has a 2 site limit and both sites are being used so i have to take one down just to get the file for this one. then put everything back the way it was, im sure in-motion will not like me afterwords. the old business was http://www.sandiegoyachtworks.com is now https://angelesgatemarine.wordpress.com/ the two sites i manage on wordpress.org are
http://www.nino4u.org/ our Ministry im one of the ministry leaders and web developer,
    http://www.sagriffin.com/ my resume and portfolio.
hey how does google rate the websites on this platform? any good? it took a lot of work to get on the first page with the marine business 1000’s of hours. SEO,SEO,SEO. i WAS PULLING MY HAIR OUT OF MY HEAD, LOL.

  • You will either need to get the site back online, yes, or upload the files to a local installation on your computer, and export from there.

Also note that if the source site is not online, we’ll have no way to import your media files. The .xml import file only contains links to where your images are hosted in the media library of the source site, not the files themselves.

hey how does google rate the websites on this platform? any good?

All WordPress.com sites are automatically configured with SEO, and our sites tend to have very good SEO, though that largely depends on the quality of content you add to a site more than anything else.

well whats the solution the original site is built around images and sliders, this platform is no good then and 25 a month??? for what??? in-motion only charges me 8. how can i edit my site without images if i have to leave it up on in-motion to use images then why bother with the import export??? Hello???

  • The source site only needs to be online in order for us to import the images. Once the import completes, and we’ve imported the media files to the library on the WordPress.com site, it will be safe to take the source site offline.
