Move website hosted by GoDaddy to WordPress

    I am the administrator for our church website but I am NOT a web developer. Our current website is at least 15 years old. I use iWeb (which is no longer supported) to maintain the web source. I am working with someone to update the website. They suggested we go to WordPress. Is there a document which details how to move a website from GoDaddy to WordPress? How to I go about getting the domain name moved or is just okay to leave it with Godaddy?

    If the website is currently built in iWeb, we don’t have a way to import it, so it would need to be redone from scratch here.

    Thanks for the response. I have looked at some of it. Do you have any thoughts on which is better – Domain Mapping or Domain Transfer. The documentation seems to say Domain Mapping, but would it not be easier just to be paying one vendor than 2? Is it cheaper to do Domain Mapping?

    It is definitely the simpler option to transfer your domain, so you pay the same provider for both the domain and the site. Also

    That would really depend on whether the domain’s annual renewal on our end is cheaper than at your current registrar. Keep in mind that when you transfer a domain, it’s also renewed for another year, so you might save some money there which could offset differences in the annual renewal cost for a few years.

    In the end, it really comes down to what you prefer, with neither option being objectively better than the other. Personally, I’d transfer – I have a domain I use here on WordPress.com with a TLD that cannot be transferred here, and it’s a constant source of frustration to me to have to manage that domain somewhere else :)

    Whichever option you decide on, make sure to leave that step till last, i.e. until after you’ve migrated any content from your existing site.
