Moved Blog to Self-Host – Now Excluded From Tag Searches.
-
I was jardinprayer.wordpress.com and I am now http://www.thegardenpartyblog.com . I was getting some nice results in tag searches while hosted here, so I left the old blog in place with a sticky post saying I’ve moved. Now, I’m only getting traffic from my regular readers and not showing up in wordpress.com tag searches. Did I make a mistake moving away to self-host? How can I get back in the swim?
Thanks!

Externally-hosted blogs are not a part of WordPress.com and therefore are excluded from the global tag and category pages. Whether or not you’ve made a mistake depends on many factors, including how important those links and that SEO are to you. What are the other factors upon which you’ve made your decision?

My primary motivation was to have control over my design, plugins, and CSS. It’s just a personal fun blog, but I was enjoying being found via tag searches and finding others that way. So, is going with self-hosting intended for people who already have an audience outside of WordPress.com?

Jardinprayer – I was thinking of doing exactly the same thing… I want to do it so I can post ads on my blog… I personally think it’s junk I can’t advertise on my site on WordPress, Especially when I paid for the No Ads + Hosting my Domain here… There has got to be a better compromised than letting the “VIPs” advertise… I’ll pay to be VIP if necessary…..

@jardinprayer, not necessarily. There are other ways your blog can be found by interested readers. The best way is to write good content and to include links to other blogs and websites. You should also make sure you register with Google and technorati and so on.
But if you like the wordpress.com community in particular, the only way to be part of that is to have a wordpress.com blog.

Oops, double post, sorry.
@ brentblawat, you can’t just pay for VIP hosting. You have to fit the criteria and even then they might not accept you.
If you paid for No-Ads and Domain Hosting then you have received the services you paid for. WordPress.com don’t owe you anything else for making use of their basic free blog platform. If you’re really prepared to pay, then the best option is to go over to wordpress.org, download the software and self-host your blog. That way you will have complete freedom. Whining here in the forums won’t get you anywhere.
