Moved domain and lost traffic

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

Yesterday I moved my primary domain (www.metalizos.com) to WordPress.org. In doing so, my wordpress.com domain has gone back to being metalizos.wordpress.com.

I didn’t realize that, by moving the domain I would lose all traffic coming to metalizos.wordpress.com. Did I lose my Google ranking and SEO as a result? Is there a way I can tranfer metalizos.com back to wordpress.com?

Thank you in advance for your guidance. I hope I didn’t make a tragic mistake…

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Since your new domain name is a day or three old, search engines have not a clue who you are

Buy the Site Redirect Upgrade to send traffic to your new name – 1 year should do it $ 13.-

Install and configure the JetPack Plugin on your .ORG site – then come back here and have the Staff move your stats & subscribers to your new blog

It will still take a few months to get your search rankings back up

Auxclass thank you for your help. I have installed and configured the JetPack plugin, however I don’t think the Site Redirect would work.

This used to be a blog post for metalizos.com on wordpress.com:
    http://metalizos.com/2014/03/24/metaphysical-me-is-changing-sign-up-required/

Now it won’t work because I’ve moved metalizos.com to wordpress.org. Is there a way I could transfer metalizos.com back to wordpress.com, so that all my post links (which I’ve shared on social media/guest posts) work again?

    Thank you.

You seem to have have two domains mapped to the same blog on BlueHost (that is Ok but)

    You have two options

    1) move the domain metalizos.com – back to WordPress.COM

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

    2) get help at WordPress.ORG and change your Permalinks to match what they are at WordPress.COM – the .ORG folks can walk you through that better than I can – bit rusty on my .ORG skills

You need an account at .ORG, the accounts are not related to WordPress.COM so you can use the same email – and if the user name is not used – you can use the same username as you do here

PS – the site redirect is to send traffic from a WordPress.COM blog / URL (your-site.wordpress.com) to another Blog / URL – you do want the PermaLinks to match on the receiving end

auxclass thank you! Knowing that I actually have 2, not just 1 option, is comforting. I am not doomed! :)

I have already tried option 1, mapped metalizos.com back to wordpress.COM and changed the nameserver. However, it came up with an error page. Reading back to the instructions on the link you sent me, there may be an explanation for that:

“Once you’ve updated your name servers, it can take some time for the change to take full effect (up to 72 hours, but normally much less). If you notice that you still see your old holding page or an error message when you load your domain, don’t panic. Give it a few hours, and then try clearing your browser cache.”

I will try that again, wait, and hope for the best.

Otherwise, I’m going with option 2. I had no idea I could match the permalinks.

I’m planning to use the SiteRedirect as soon as I get metalizos.com back to wordpress.COM. Currently, I have zero traffic to my wordpress.com site because of the move, so there isn’t a reason for redirecting it.

Did you also change the name servers back to WordPress.COM for metalizos.com?

That is also required for the mapping to work – if you just changed the name servers then you are probably inside the time frame for me to see the name server change – please double check the name server settings

Once the name servers are changed the waiting period starts, and yes the errors you will see during the waiting period can be tough. You can clear your browser cache & force a page reload, you will also be the last one to see the changes

    I’ve just done it.

    – Set metalizos.com as the primary domain on wordpress.COM
    – Went over to BlueHost and changed metalizos.com’s nameservers to to the wordpress.COM ones

Currently, this what I get when I go to metalizos.com… Let the wait begin.

“There is no website configured at this address.”

    Hold Your Horses!

It can take as long as 72 hours for DNS changes to become widely available. If you’re still not seeing your site loading at metalizos.com, please wait a few more hours, clear your browser cache, and try again.
    Nameservers Validated!

Congratulations! The nameservers appear to be set up correctly for metalizos.com.

metalizos.com is set as the primary domain for metalizos.wordpress.com and will appear in the address bar when you visit the site.

To translate the above – take a long walk and have a couple of your favorite beverages while you wait for the changes to move across the internet. :)
