Moved: links and images don't work, redirect?

  • Unknown's avatar

    1) When I moved my blog from WordPress, the links in the posts to the old wordpress blog did not update. The old images are there but not attached to the post. The Bluehost support I tried said I would have to go through each of 1500 posts and do all the reconnections one by one. Is that true? because that doesn’t really seem like “transferring” the blog if I have to relink by hand.
    2) I tried to buy a redirect upgrade.. didn’t know I could until recently. Is it too late because the old blog doesn’t show up on my list of blogs, so it doesn’t appear that I can redirect, but it makes sense you would want to redirect from an old blog that doesn’t exist.
Note: I understand that I should now go to wordpress.org for help but these two questions still have to do with transferring. i may want to transfer another blog, but if I have to fix them by hand afterwards, I wouldn’t want to do any more transfers.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi Sharon,

When importing the site into your Bluehost site, if the option to “download and import attachments” was checked, it should have brought all of your images over and attached them correctly to your posts.

If it didn’t and since it has been so long (assuming new content has been written, so starting fresh with the import new isn’t an option), I’m not aware of an option that I would recommend.

For the site redirect upgrade, you can purchase it at any time. What is the address of your old site?

    Thanks!

The one I want to redirect is ncfp.wordpress.com
It’s hard to imagine that the person who moved it didn’t check that box..but I guess it could have happened.

    1. I guess you’re saying it’s not as simple as writing some code that goes through all the posts and says …”*.ncfp.wordpress equals *.forestpolicypub.com?

Do you think there are programmers I could pay to code that, or to just take the old blog file and replace the older posts?

    2. If I can’t just get it redone, then I have to go through and physically reattach every image and every link back to the blog. While I can do the links, the images are hard because it’s not clear which posts they attach to. Would it be possible to repost the old blog privately so I could check it to see where the images were linked?

  • Hi Sharon,

It actually can be as simple as the code to rewrite it, but it isn’t something that I would recommend without asking a professional to do (or unless you’re really comfortable with code, the database, and how to fix things if it borks up.

You can run a find/replace directly against the database that finds all instances of ncfp.files.wordpress.com as you mentioned and change it to your domain. If the file upload structure is the same (e.g. image01.jpg at ncfp.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/image01.jpg is at forestpolicypub.com/uploads/2013/09/image01.jpg), then it should work.

Another, related, suggestion is you can follow these instructions at http://www.billerickson.net/migrating-wordpress-websites/ on how to change the domain name information. You’d need to change “ncfp.wordpress.com” for the links.

For the images, it’d be a little different since our file structure is ncfp.files.wordpress.com/YEAR/MONTH/ while most WordPress.org installs are either forestpolicypub.com/wp-content/uploads/YEAR/MONTH/ or some similar format. The same instructions could be used by using ncfp.files.wordpress.com for the first domain and forestpolicypub.com/wp-content/uploads for the second domain.

In all cases, this is relatively advanced database editing and I would strongly suggest having someone who is a professional (or comfortable with this level of technical work at least) perform the work and it is essential to have a database backup in case things break. (Because of that and being unable to help if things do break, I didn’t suggest it originally).

    Cheers!

OK, 1) is there an internet place where I can find qualified professionals?

and 2) I am still interested in paying for a redirect from ncfp.wordpress.com

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

There are a couple of places I’d look:

    1. Your local WordPress community – there are a lot of local resources in many places with qualified folks. Searching Google for WordPress and your city’s name is a good first start.
    2. Alternatively, there is a “job board” for WordPress online at http://jobs.wordpress.net/ .

I’ve setup the redirect for you and you’ll have an e-mail in a few moments requesting payment.

    Thanks!
