Moving a blog from WP.org to WP.com: comments fail to migrate with posts
-
I am in the process of migrating to a WP blog. Since my tech skills are very basic, I had a techie friend export all of my posts and comments as a WXR file. The problem is that the comments don’t seem to be importing. I’ve tried deleting all the posts and re-importing the file, but no luck. My friend says that the comments are definitely in the file and that they’re probably not being imported because comment_exists() returns a true value every time.
Can you offer any help/advice re. how to import the file with the comments? If possible, please phrase as if you were writing an entry in File Importing For Dummies.
This is my first time using a WP blog, by the way, and I am suitably impressed. A friend just explained that the help forums are run by volunteers, so please accept my thanks in advance for your help, and for the fantastic job you’re all doing.

I think it depends a bit on where the previous blog was hosted. My first impression is that the format might have been wrong, although that’s probably unlikely if the posts are coming through unscathed. If you could give us a little more detail, it might help.
There’s one thing you might be able to try in the meantime. Do you still have the previous blog? If you do, it probably has a comment feed, something like yourblog.com/comments/feed/ . If you save that (save page as from your file menu), you could import that instead and at least get some of the comments. You could also try importing to another host like Blogger or LiveJournal, both of which integrate well with WP, and from there into your WP blog; it’s a bit of a workaround, but it might help. :)

Thanks, CJwriter. I’ve passed your info on to my techie friend – waiting for his input. I really don’t want to lose the comments: some of them are epic, and many contain important links.

Hi lisa, sorry, I just realised I completely misread your post. You’re coming from WP.org; I totally didn’t see it, LOL. :)
Anyway, if you’re coming from WP.org, it should work very smoothly with our built-in import. I’d suggest asking your friend to try exporting the file again, just to see if you get the same result. Otherwise you might need to ask over at http://wordpress.org/support as I think they might be able to help you more as they have more detailed access.
Using your comments feed, though, should still work, so I’d definitely try that. If all else fails, you could cut and paste them manually into your blog, but that would be a bit time-consuming. :)

Hi CJ,
I’m the techie friend. :)
I also have a wp.com blog; but I only got it for the api key to use with akismet in my .org install. So, I tried importing Lisa’s WXR content to that one — got the same results that Lisa had.
In addition, I tried importing the WXR to a fresh wp.org instance — again, same result (only the first comment imported, posts all there).
I’m beginning to suspect that there is a bug in WP, during import the comment_exists() check is apparently giving a false positive for every comment but the first.
Putting this info here for posterity / support’s sake, perhaps somebody more knowledgable than I can use it to fashion a fix. :)

I happen to know that there were some difficulties yesterday with wp import/export. Staff do monitor these forum threads so they will see what you have posted. :)

I certainly hope there is hope but the only way to get an update on what’s going on is from staff. Staff do monitor these forum threads but if you feel you wish to contact them you can use this link http://wordpress.com/contact-support/
