Moving a post from one page to another
-
Is it possible to move the very first post on my front page “Flo’s Introduction” to the “About Page”?? If that is not possible, could I simply create a new page to put the “Flo’s Introduction” on and then put that as a subcategory under “About Me”?? In other words, how could I get that one article off the front page??
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello there,
Deletion is the short answer but let me explain fully first. There is no automatic way to change a post to a page. The two are very different. You will have to copy and paste contents. You can either edit your About page to include the copy paste contents from the post and delete the post. Or you can create a sub-page and copy paste the contents into it.
Here are instructions:

BTW did you know that you can adjust the number of posts that are displayed on your front page? That can be done on this page Settings > Reading
Look for > Blog pages show at most ___ posts
Cnage the number and click “Save Changes” -
Thank you, “timethief, very much for the help and further advice. You completely answered my question in the detail needed for this beginner. THEN, you very kindly went on to answer a question that I wondered about but had decided wasn’t even possible to do. THANKS VERY MUCH!!! This makes sense now!!
-
I do have one more question though. I read the instructions for the difference between pages and posts but one thing was not quite clear.
Suppose I would like a page that deals with “Makeup and Hair”, another page that deals with “Washington DC and Politics”, another one that deals with “Family and Friends”. You get the idea here. Now the question is, can I have all those pages and more AND have separate categories under each of those pages page?? (I think I can BUT I didn’t quite understand the last of the instructions on pages vs posts.)
I’m beginning to learn what I’m doing here and am actually loving this blog stuff. :)
-
Am giving this a kick up just in case my last question is getting lost. Would rather not have to start a whole new post for this question.
-
Use “categories” to organize your posts. When a reader clicks “makeup and hair” in your category widget all the articles you have written on that topic will appear. (Same with whatever other categories you use.)
Here is information about the category widget:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/categories-widget/Categories help to organize your posts, and they also allow readers, with interests similar to yours, to find your blog using WordPress’ global tags. Tags act the same way as categories to get your blog into the global tags feature.
Here is info about the difference between tags and categories:

If I may expand on this subject – Email notifications are sent to subscribers when you create a POST – does the same hold true when you’re creating a PAGE?
In following the above instructions: I can take an earlier post and convert it to a page by copying it to a page, then deleing the original post…would an email be sent while rearranging or house cleaning like this?
-
I don’t understand what you mean by “house cleaning” because your posts are automatically archived and are already “cleaned” away from your home page. Why would you want to turn them into pages?
If the posts are properly categorized potential readers can find them via categories (or tags), but they are not there cluttering up you home (front page, blog page, or whatever various themes call you dynamic page).
Changing or editing a page does not trigger new feeds, so I doubt that editing a page would either. (I don’t even think pages have feeds or notifications.)
Changing posts to pages, or changing their dates will result in 404 not found errors for people searching on Google (and the others). Not a good thing if your page has disappeared.
-
I guess my problem is I started out (only two posts so far) without thinking through things like catagories and/or pages vs. posts, etc.
My first ‘post’ would make a good ‘about page’ as it was a kind of introduction as to why I started the blog, so I’m wondering if at some point I can convert it accordingly, without sending emails to the subscribers as new content, which it is not.
I’m probably not articulating this very well…but thanks for your attention.

@hkcarpenter
There is no automatic way to transfer content in a post to a page and visa versa. You can do this only by the copy and paste method as I stated above. If you copy and paste that paste the contents of the post into a Page that will not be sent our on the RSS feed. The RSS feed is for entries ie. Posts. It is not for Pages. -
Thank you very much! I was hoping that was the case.
During the posting of my first two entries, I’d inadvertently hit the ‘Publish’ button instead of the ‘Preview’ button a couple of times, letting my subscribers watch my learning curve – I’ve since become very gun-shy of the Publish button (which is on the Page template as well).
Thanks again, timethief.

A word of encouragement:
If you have only two posts so far, then it’s likely that very very few people noticed your learning curve. And if they did then you could put something into your next post that your are seeking to make your blog better.I have found that if I publish my posts privately, then when I hit the update button, the post remains private and no one can see it except me. There is the added advantage that a post published privately looks the same as it will when published publicly.
Also, sometimes when previewing a draft post, you don’t see what the post will look like when it is really published.
-
What I mean about that publishing privately comment is that it’s harder to make a mistake and show “the world” an unfinished post: there are more buttons to push to make it public.

When I first answered this I knew I was communicating with a newbie who had very few posts so I responded in the way I did.I provided the easiest answer which is to copy and paste the content into a static page and delete the post. Now let”s take this up a notch. raincoaster and I would never choose to delete a post because we have established blogs, and do not wish to create 404’s (page not found), nor would we wish to loose any Google juice the existing already published post could garner. Therefore although we may choose to create a Page with the same content in it we would not be deleting the post.
