Moving A Sidebar
-
Hi, I have the TwentyTwelve theme and when I’m on my iPad the side bar appears at the right side of the page, but when I’m on my laptop it appears at the bottom.
Does anyone have any idea how to move it so it is always at the right side?
I’ve read a lot about child themes? Do I have to pay to be able to do this and is it necessary?
Thanks for any advice

Are you on an iPad mini? Your sidebar appears in the right place on my iPad.
Regardless, the explanation: the sidebar jumps to the bottom as part of the theme’s responsive design: when your site detects that it’s being viewed on a smaller screen, it moves the sidebar out of the way so that the main content can be viewed more comfortably. You’ll notice this happens on phones as well.
There is probably a way to force your site not to do this by purchasing the custom design upgrade and adding some css rules. Let us know if you want to get into the details of that. But responsive adjustment is a useful, user-friendly feature, in my opinion!
Side note re: child themes. You can only create child themes for self-hosted wordpress.org installs. Hosted wordpress.com sites can only choose from the large list of themes provided.

HA, just realized I read your question backwards. So it’s going to the bottom when you’re viewing on your laptop? I assume your laptop screen is wide enough to show it regular format. Could you tell us which browsers you’ve viewed your site in, and whether they all show it the same way?

Hi, thanks for your response. I’d never even thought to check browsers. I’ve just checked on my laptop on google chrome and its at the right but at the bottom on internet explorer.
Yes, my lap top is wide enough to show the regular format so not sure why that’s happening.
I thought that might be the case for child themes but wasn’t sure. I’m new to the blogging world and very much playing catch up with the technology.
Thank you for commenting, it’s been really helpful.

No problem at all. Are you using the most recent version of Internet Explorer? Check here, and download an update if you’re not: http://browsehappy.com/
